For example, a pregnant girl at my job smokes, and I heard one of the guys say that he can't believe she is doing that. The woman he was talking to said he can't judge her. I have heard people say "you can't judge" someone for every imaginable defense. This strikes me as odd since it is the action that is being spoken of 99% of the time, not the person's character.

I have my own opinion, but what does "judging" someone mean by the way that you use this word?

Many of you are using the word "judge" in your explanation. I am asking you what you think the word "judge" itself means, not the consequences of doing it or why it shouldn't be done.

Remember, if I am asking you to explain a word, you cannot use that same word in it's definition.

It's where you draw discriminating conclusions about people, using actions that are of no concern as support. And it's not always wrong to judge. There is such thing as righteous judgement.

If you make a judgment on someone out of concern, like that guy was doing, that's a righteous judgement. It saw her actions and he said what is true. It was wrong. It should not matter what her reasons are. Righteous judgement is leaving the problem where it is. In this case it's her actions.

Where judging others goes wrong, is when you begin to condemn them. Or using their faults as topic for idol gossip. Putting them down to make yourself feel better about something you did. That kind of thing. That's unrighteous judgement. It's done without compassion or concern.

Judging someone means you have an idea in your mind about that person and treat him/her according to that idea in your mind without knowing whether it's real or not.

You should never treat people based on the impression you get, but rather based on facts. Even then, you should try to treat them nicely even though they might be very different from you.

If you judge someone negatively they tend to get defensive and use that quote. If you judge someone positively then they seem to like that you judged them. I would suggest to just be tactful in whichever way you choose. Peace

pointing fingers draws attention both ways

you often get unwanted attention in pointing out flaws of others, and becoming the target of next unwanted attention
