I was thinking is it harder to improvise riffs and solos on the guitar, or to "freestyle" as it's called with your voice...

I'd say lyrics are harder. For some reason the guitar is very easy to improvise on, once you learn the basic chords. Most lyrics are absolutely absurd anyway so it must he harder.

You should be able to play some simple songs within a month or two. How hard it is really depends on the quality of your instrument, and the time you put into it. If you end up buying a guitar, you want to be very careful about 'student' guitars. You want to stay away from less than full size acoustic guitars, as well as anything ridiculously cheap (under $100). A lot of the cheap ones will have action that makes it very difficult for anyone to play it, and make have serious problems, like parts coming unglued, after 6 months or so. Those kind of cheap guitars will hold you back.

It really just depends on the person. I LOVE improvising lyrics live....
