I used to think so, but after spending time here and seeing many people describe themselves as believing in god, but non religious, I have to say NO, they are not remotely the same.

No ... you can believe in God (or many gods), and yet not practice or belong to any religion or follow religious practices. You may believe that such practices actually separate you from God and distract you from a pure relationship with Him/Her/Them/It.

Sounds right. Religion doesn't just mean organized religion. So, people who believe in God but don't adhere to any particular creed or sect would still be considered religious, in my opinion.

No, there are many people who believe God exists who also hate established religion. They believe in personal worship instead of mass.
Buddhists and I think Animists are atheists (they do not believe in god figures, or deities) but are still religious and spiritual.

Semantically there is no difference, and James R is wrong on both of his 'definitions,' which only serve to reveal his bias and ignorance.
Look around and you find more and more 'anti-theists' like me, who have become so fed up with religious crap that we are now actively fighting against the very idea, as being extremely bad for humanity and the rest of the world.

Atheists have no belief in god. One can believe in god but still be nonreligious. All atheists are nonreligious, But not all non religious are atheists.

No. Buddhists are atheists (Buddha was no god) but they are religious, seeing that they follow what is called Buddhism.

In practice, yes (as in church/temple/whatever doesn't hold sway in their lives).
But in theory non-religious people could be deists, or pantheists, or hold any number of -ism beliefs...they just don't consider themselves part of a "religion."

No. In my opinion they are different.
Atheist put their faith in the religion of no god.
Non-religious to me, means belief in G-d but not actually practicing any religion.
