Christianity pretty much has a chokehold on this country and has been, effectively, deciding policy since Jerry Falwell's rise. But in spite of Christians' claims that their religion and Jesus are the answer to all problems, people are suffering. We are at war - both militarily and ideologically, and poverty is increasing. Families are losing their homes. Christians themselves complain often about the lack of morality that they're sure exists and is worsening, according to them. If Christianity is the great panacea that its followers claim it to be, why is this country in such bad shape?

How to explain this paradox? Is Christianity good or bad?

even more sad is the fact that the poor tend to be the most religious. I wonder why they aren't getting the answers to their fervent prayers

1. Christianity was never meant to be a social panacea. I'm sure the many martyrs of the church would have been interested in that theology...

2. The reason the country's in such bad shape is that - in brief - (a lot of ) the Christians allied themselves with corporatists who have no interest in their religion except insofar as they can use it to pander for votes. The actual people in power are far more concerned with keeping power than any religious ideology. That's something the evangelicals' forefathers recognized - the original idea of "separation of church and state" was an evangelical idea. Go figure.

3. Is Christianity good or bad? Both.

Peace to you.

The paradox exists because your premise is faulty.

Christianity does not have a "chokehold" on this country. The leadership of this country changes, but the bureaucracy remains filled with the same people, predominantly Democrats.

Regardless, it is not the function of Christianity to end poverty or bring about world peace. Christianity preaches to the world that is is Jesus Christ who will do this upon his return and the setting up of his kingdom.

You are missing one vital point; the people do not always do what they are supposed to do in Christianity. People do nto always follow any dogma. In the athiestic communist nations, they have not solved the problems of war and poverty. Nor in muslim nations. Nor in Buddhist nations in SE Asia. nor any nation for that matter.

The only true link here, is that all these belief systems have failed because human beings do not follow what they teach. Thus, to say Christianity is good or bad by this standard is the wrong question. The question is, "is mankind good or bad?"

First of all you vastly overestimate the Christian influence in this country, and much of what is Christian is Christian in name only.

Also, Christianity does not claim to solve the world's problems. The Bible teaches that man is inherently sinful. There will always be pain, suffering, and strife in the world, until Jesus returns. Christianity will not make your life perfect, you will still have problems in life. What it does give though is something to live for. It fills the lack of purpose in our lives, and gives up hope for the future. The apostle Paul said that if this life is all we Christians have, then we are to be pitied above all men. My hope is in heaven.

Jesus said "the poor will be with you always". Christianity isn't about solving society's problems. It's about a right relationship with God.

Christians are, without a doubt, NOT in control of anything in government. If anything, we are losing the battle culturally.

The Democrats' war on poverty caused what was a steady decline in the poverty rate to come to a stop back in the 60's and hold steady after that. Democrats must keep the poor in poverty so they can continue to promise them new programs and continue to get their votes. When the poor get wealthy they realize that wealth doesn't come through government programs, it comes through hard work and personal effort and they become Republicans. So as long as libs are in control there will always be poor or else they lose their voter base.

Christianity is good. It is our human nature that is bad. If we lived by Christian principals we would all be fine. Obviously our country is not entirely Christian. I would say over half of the country loves things and uses people. We can not even agree to disagree. Even in our own households let alone the world.

you call the ACLU christian?

and this PC ****?

LMFAO!!!

you are a funny man

i never knew christians liked unions, or hell, people to be dependent on the government....

and this country, is not in bad shape dude. If it was, you wouldn't be on the internet right now

EDIT: Oh my, the ACLU fights for christians! well, i knew that, but i am saying that the ACLU is NOT christian, not that it is anti christian. You see, there is a difference. Strange, you mistook my words and used them to make yourself sound a little weird, but you probably had sheepie believe you. oh well

EDIT2: btw, how the heck does christianity own america, and run it? You seem to have left facts out of your question... oh well, most people with outlandish statements tend to do that

Yeah and what is even more strange is how they claim this country is a Christian country.
Where is god now? Or why haven't their god helped out with the problems in the USA?

OH Right. Free will. I forgot about that.

Christianity has never been tried in any country. There is no such thing as a Christian country. If there was ever one there would be no poverty and injustice in that country.
