In the UK there is no law regarding leaving children under 14 home alone. It is down to child safety and whether the act was negligent and caused harm to the child!
I do believe that the case would have been handled differently in the UK and the parents would be eliminated from their enquiries from day one rather than at this late date xx

It is procedure in UK to treat the parents (very sympathetically) as suspects and all evidence etc is collected with this in mind, although they will not be treated in a hostile manner. I think in Portugal - the police were confronted by nine people, and Sky news before they had had a chance to assess the situation and those people were VERY insistent that there had been an intruder. I don't know whether it is procedure to treat the parents as suspects at the outset of the crime in Portugal, but I'm guessing if they didn't then it wasn't. I think the PJ have been royaly shafted by both the press and the PR machine tho - I think part of that is the secrecy rule and part of it is due to the extremely intrusive nature of modern day media. I also think that every police officer who helped look for Madeleine in the days after her disappearance shouldn't think that the British public think badly of them, people just think what the papers tell them and Britian is notorious for thinking services in other countries aren't as good as ours. Maybe it's national pride, or maybe it's something more sinister than that. Can't answer. Different procedures in different places. Happiness for you too! **Raybbies** Don't be stupid. Considering he has written this in not his mother tongue I'm impressed - could you do better?

From experience, this would have been dealt with very differently in UK. Firstly, it would have been called as a critical incident within minutes of being reported which calls on all police resources to assist. The scene would have been sealed and nobody would have been allowed in without authority until a full forensic examination had taken place. In the majority of cases, the child is taken by somebody who knows them (I'm not saying this is the case here) and the close family would have been questioned very thoroughly about the circumstances of the child going missing. There would also be a concerted area search and enquiries for any witnesses. It's difficult to say what the situation is in this case due to the Portuguese police rules of not discussing a case. This has led to gross speculation by everybody as to what exactly happened. It will be some time before this is resolved.

I think that the Portuguese police is not in any way inferior to the police forces in other developed countries. However, since the legal system and administrative structure are different, their way of investigation is also different.
It is hard to say if British or US police would have treated the McCanns as suspects right from the start. They did behave in a very unusual way, and still do. Perhaps a psychological profiler might have helped to see the truth much earlier.
If what the Portuguese police suspects is correct, then it may well be too late by now to bring the murderer(s) to justice.

Because that is normal that the people close to the person in any case parents, siblings,r the first to fall under the umbrella of suspicion because they r the ones closest to the victim, and until they r eliminated they r considered suspects as well so that is the way the system in this country the US,works I can't say about the UK,because I do not live there but this country that is the way it is done and I feel should be if u have done nothing wrong than u have nothing to worry about right!!

It is all a matter of proof that a court will beleive. In this case the Police have insufficient evidence to charge the Mcanns. But it is possible to convict on circumstancial evidence without finding a body.A few yrs ago a man killed is wife in the Uk and buried her in Motorway construction concrete. He was convicted of her murder even though the body was never found.

I would certainly think that it would be in the back of the cop's mind.
In the US, depending on the State you cant leave children under 12 unattended, if you get caught is a one way ticket to the can for neglect.

Usually the last person to see the victim alive, is the killer.
And it is illegal to leave children alone, (for ANY time period) under the age of 14 in the UK.
