You don't seem to be very enthusiastic about maintaining things, and if you are regularly running recovery rather than fixing problems, you dont appear to be very computer savy.

If you want minimum effort to set up and maintain - don't try linux. If Mac suits you, stay there.

If I misjudge you, and you are curious, you don't mind trying to figure out why your wireless doesn't work, and having to learn where to get ndiswrapper and how to install it and how to configure it, and how to post detailed questions in your search for a solution, try Ubuntu. .

Once you get it installed and PROPERLY setup it should work for a long, long time with minimal problems. And, if you don't screw up the partitioning, you may find that Ubuntu installs without a hitch.

You should at the very least give Linux a try.

About the best Linux for a Windows user who doesn't really want to get into the nuts & bolts of Linux, is PCLinuxOS. The CD runs as a live CD, so you can run it without having to install to the hard disk. You can also do the dual boot thing, and keep your Windows install until you're comfortable with Linux.

Don't be afraid to make the switch. I've switched a number of non-computer-people friends from Windoze to PCLinuxOS. After a 10 minute orientation, most have never even had to call me for help.

NO do not get Linux.

Ive used them all since they were born. And I love linux. But from what you say my answer would be NO. Linux is not ready to replace windows as a desktop software. And you have Mac OS X which is has nearly all of the pros and cons of linux.

If you arent switching to get a more powerful OS to play with, or an internet server, then dont bother. For games and pretty stuff its way behind windows.

Further to the previous answer, should you choose Linux and also Ubuntu, take a look at the official website:
