Oh,please ....the Protestants of course. Catholics like to say they are the oldest church but they did not break away to try to Lord it over the other churches until 300 years after Christ resurrected. That is a long @ss time!Paul set the churches up (ITimothy and Titus) to have Pastors (married ones) ,Elders and Deacons. Not Priests and Nuns and weird Laity thing a ma bobs.Peter was never a Pope and probably never in Rome ,he calls himself an Elder(I Peter 5) and was married. When he says he was writing from Babylon ,he was. There was a huge Jewish community there and had been since 600 B.C.
Paul set up the church so that a ruling Elder, a Bishop would oversee his area .Never was the Bishop of Rome to be the head Muckity-Muck over all Christianity.
I could go on all day about all the Man-Made stuff they do .Things that Jesus railed against the Jews for .They too had forgotten God's word in lieu of following "The traditions of men"..The Midrash's ,Targum's ,and other commentaries on commentaries that buried the word of God.
That's why Martin Luther was so insistent that "Scriptures only" Solas Scripturas ,be the rule.Read the Bible ,know to separate the Old and New Testament "Law from Grace" and you can't really go wrong.

You're missing a few groups there .... Jews, Ba'hai, Buddhists, Islam, Atheists, Agnostics, Hindus, Native Americans, Zoroastraians, Neo-Pagans, Wiccans, Reconstructionists and on and on.

It isn't a Protestant / Catholic thing alone. Either has valid points but neither necessarily has to be right over others.

The Roman Catholic Church is the Jesus Christ's Founded Church, without doubt. Before Martin Luther split from Catholocism in the 1500's, almost all Christians were Catholic. Indeed, it was the Catholic Monks in Monasteries during the Middle Ages who preserved the Bible and translated it. Just read all the books and writings from the Desert Fathers of the early Church, and you'll see their views and practices are closest to the Catholic Church. We have The Holy Eucharist, which has always been the center of the Christian Church and the Liturgy. All these other Church's that are around have broken away from the Catholic Church because they didn't want to follow authority, but wanted to make their own rules. That's why Christ appointed the Apostles and particularly Peter as the Rock on which His Church is to be built. Our current Pope, Benedict XI, is a direct successor of Saint Peter; and our current Bishops are direct successors of the Apostles, thus this notion being called Apostolic Succession, which has lasted 2000 years down to the present. No other Church can say that, since they have split and made their own false church, thus being "man-made" church's.Christ's Church was Divinely instituted and thus will last until the end as He stated Himself. Jesus gave Peter the Keys to the Kingdom of Heaven, thus Peter being in charge, in a certain way. the powers of evil will have not bring it down, but His Church will last until the end of time. The many ministers of non-Catholic churchs have not received the Apostolic blessing as validly ordained Catholic Priests, which receive the laying-on-of Hands by the Bishops, who are direct decsendants of the Apostles. Regarding Sacred Tradition, it is valid within the Catholic Church. Regarding Solely on Scripture is not logical, since the New Testament was not even written until many years after Jesus ascended to Heaven and the Church was born. That's how Tradition started. There was a specific way the early Christians lived and practiced the faith, as instructed by the Apostles. These practices and rituals were thus preserved by the Very first Christians, since they were taught to them by the Apostles. Also, not every single thing Jesus said and taught was recorded in Scripture. If it were, it would cover many more books than that of the New Testament. Just think about, it's common sense. Certain teachings and practices that originated from Christ and His Apostles have been carried out down thru the ages, and preserved by the Catholic Church, which is what the first Christian Church was and still practices. Christians need an Authority, and that is why the Apostles appointed presbyters to govern the many churches' or communties of the faithful that were being established. But if someone did something questionable or who went against the Apostles teachings or practices, then they were reprimanded and had to ammend or else be cast out from the community. In today's Church, such people decide to start their own church or join a non-Catholic Church to appease or accomodate their views or wishes. This is where they're wrong. For that is why we have Authority, as in the Pope and Bishops. They are in the position to establish rules that are to be faithfully accepted. As you can see, the Catholic Church does not change its vital teachings with the changing times, but stands true to them down thru the ages. Many other churches allow all kinds of behavior and false teachings which are heresies, indeed. Another thing with the Church is all the many, many Saints who we can look up to and follow their example of Virtueous living. They trully lived the life of Christ. There are also many documented Miracles perfomed by the Saints while they lived and even after their death. Read the many books from Renowned Saints and Church Doctors such as: St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Augustine, St. Jerome, St. John Crysostom; The Carmelite Saints-St. John of the Cross and St. Teresa of Avila, and St. Therese`, and many, many more wonderful amazing testimonies to their strong Catholic Faith. The Church is just so full of richness and history, as it also is the ultimate cause of Western Civilization. If you want information and Facts, I encourage you to research the depths of Church History, and you will find that The Catholic Church is truly One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic!

On the question of what?

There are many differences betwen the two, but most Catholics and most Protestants hold to the same core positions concerning the Christian faith; the divinity of Christ, the bodily resurrection, the foregiveness of sins, etc.

I don't think anyone really knows
I'm just thirteen but since you didn't state specifics I think it would be ok to state my feelings on the little I know about them

but anyway
right about what?
I'm protestant, episcopalian to be more specific,
but I was told the only big difference was catholics pray to mary
protestants are christian, therefore we pray to god

I suppose it's who ever you feel is most responsible

In my opinion, its god, because mary did not chose to birth jesus
not to downplay mary, but thats how I feel

There's only one authentic and uiniversal church, and that will always be the Catholic church, because that's the only church that Jesus ever founded, and it's the only church which he still heads, today.

All the protestant Christian groups subsist within the Catholic church, but due to their own peculiar faith traditions, they do so in an imperfect, even inferior way.

Most of them don't even know this is actually the case.

Your question requires the sorting of theological nits into the right or wrong categories. It seems highly likely that neither denomination will have all its nits on the truth bucket.
