If you are a civilian working for the military, would you also be able to live abroad in the bases and do temporary duties in other places?

My friend is an enlisted who is stationed in Japan, but she has temporary duties for weeks at a time to like Korea, Hawaii...etc. Do the civilian employees get to do the same?

There is always civilian jobs available at overseas bases. When we lived in Europe, there were many people who lived on base that were civilian. As for civilians who work in the United States, they also travel overseas for different reasons if their job requires such.

but you say your friend is enlisted which means that they are IN the military....and yes they can go TDY to where ever they are needed....but if a civilian works at the NEX or that sort of thing pretty much NO chance of that happening at all, when you leave the duty area then you can reapply at the next one etc but as for being sent to help out no chance. IMO

The majority do not. Most of the civilians who travel actually work for private companies who are contracted for a specific job through the DOD.

Some of them do. We had a civilian tech rep. for all the Hornet squadrons with us in Japan for the FLIR pods. When we deployed, on both cruises and dets., he went with us.

It depends on the job they do. If you are a clerk at a battalion HQ, then no, you probably wont travel.

If you are security inspector for example, you will travel all the time.
