well you are bound be told to rent a car
but you can get around using transit pretty well
as Metro has a day pass (for $5.00) which you can get at the red line station
the subway is very safe there are constant patrols by deputy
sheriff's and fare inspectors as well, and its clean
since there is no eating drinking or smoking allowed in the stations or aboard the trains
there are a few ways to get to Lax from Universal
one involves 1 train and express bus
one involves 3 trains transfer and 1 bus
and last one involves one train and a local bus
the fast way is to take the Red Line to Union station
(pay $1.25 (or use your day pass) then go upstairs to the transit plaza and board the flyway for $4.00 for direct service into Lax
all train route is the Red Line to 7th/Metro then transfer to
blue Line to Rosa park station, then transfer again to the green line to the Aviation station then the lax shuttle bus into the terminals
(cost is $1.25 on each train (or day pass)
the last is red Line to 7th and metro then the 439
to the Lot c terminal then the Lot C bus into the Lax

With all due respect to "Mobilemark" the Los Angeles public transit system (as it is) can be very confusing to someone who does not live here, and is not familiar with the various areas.
This is one of those times when I must agree with everyone that is suggesting that you rent a car. You will be able to travel at will, and have much more time to spend sight seeing rather than just sitting on trains and buses trying to get there.
You could probably survive touring in the Los Angeles area simply using the public transit system, but going to Magic Mountain in Valencia is a destination that requires a car. There is no good way to get there by public transit. It's too far away from town.

To travel from LAX to Universal you have a couple of choices. For $5 for an all day pass you can ride the Metro Rail. From LAX stand under the Blue sign and get on the G shuttle, that one is free, it will take you from the airport to the Green Line. Take the green line, then the blue line north and then the red line to Univeral. You can also take a regular shuttle like Super Shuttle or Primetime Shuttle. They will take you directly there with you not having to change vehicles. But for MM and in Valencia you would probably need to drive. I would rent a car. The car rental place has great maps and small cars are not that expensive. The MetroRail is safe. Just be aware of your surroundings.

LA is so spread out, I wish I could give easy answers. The truth is a car is the easiest.
as the other poster said, simply getting from LAX to Universal is some combination of busses and trains. Call your hotel and see if they have a shuttle service, if not, best to rent a car.
a two and a half hour multibus trip to magic mountain for someone who does not know the area may lead to some mistakes and getting lost.
Car.

1. Best way to travel around L.A. is by car
2. Best way to get to Universal City from LAX, without a car, is Primetime Shuttle. (Lower level LAX, look for green signs)
3. The subway (red line) does head south from Universal City one exit to Hollywood and Highland. It is safe but the ticket machine is a little complicated (there are so many choices)
4. Don't know anything about magic mountain ...it is too far north and hard to get to without a car..Good Luck..Have Fun

See a celeb; glass a cocktail on a roof club at sunset; wear a pair of custom shoes within an ultra-luxurious boutique in Beverly Hills; enjoy at Universal Studios Hollywood topic park, discover world-class museums, or party the night out in a starlet-filled club…..this are simply someof the things you will dsicover in Los Angeles, learn this city with hotelbye . Los Angeles is the California's liveliest city; could be the activity capital of America, with megastar wattage and unlimited activities. Hollywood may be the most-see attractions in Los Angeles. That place attracts an incredible number of readers each year who vacation there to pay for honor to their favorite stars and perhaps even find a glimpse of several famous personalities. And sometimes they are lucky!

Hi I have just gotten back from LA a few weeks. I went with a few friends and we also planned on taking the public transport. However If i was going back to LA I would 100% rent a car. The public transport is not great. The subway system is fantastic however Is not that large so you basically can travel to downtown on a few lines, but the system is not as extensive as the one in NYC or London, so this may limit your travel options. The bus is not great Im afraid. Mabey for short journeys but nothing over 30 minutes! For example We were staying at universal city and wanted to get to six flags, In order to do so we had to get 3 buses and it took along 2 hours. We got a bus from Universal to glendale, a bus from glendale to McBean transfer station and then a bus from McBean to Six Flags. Although we got there in the end, It was quite a trek! Another day we wanted to go to Disney, so we went to downtown and then a 1h30min bus to disney, standing all the way But I should point out that public transport is SOOOOO cheap, that I would use it again! It only aproc $1.25 for a ticket and then 25cent for transfer between buses, FANTASTIC!!! in ireland you would pay 2.50euro which is around $5 for one bus journey. The guide books do point out, do not take bus during the night!! Although we did and found we had no problems, it did get a little rough on the bus to downtown as fights broke out! So just bare that in mind!

Magic Mtn. is in Valencia. About a 30 min drive from Universal. The best way to do it is to rent a car for $25 a day. Trust me on this one. Its not like New York here. Subway is somewhat safe but bums are always sleeping on it and its not safe after 5-6pm.

I would recommend you tour the Gamble house built by Architects Green and Green, and see some of their other homes in the same neighborhood.
You could also go hiking at Griffeth Park.
Many many things to do, but my knowledge of LA is very limited...
