working with multi-gigabyte images in photoshop and it's slow, even with optimization.

is there anything better (on winXP/vista 32or64bit) specifically designed to handle image processing/compositing and other functions on images?

Although scanners have 2400x 2400 resolution, you seldom need more than 600x 600.

I think that you don't need a new program: Photoshop is the best one. Probably what you need is just more computing power, that is a faster CPU, a more powerful graphic card and a Raptor (Western Digital fastest hard disk).
