My professor says she wants "5 technically sound prints"...what the heck does that mean?!

My guess would be properly exposed, properly framed or cropped, properly processed (if you're processing your own prints).

You're best bet is to ask your professor, she' the one who knows what she wants, AND she's the one you need to make happy with your assignment.

18 years ago Tillman Crane of the Maine Photo Workshops taught me:
Composition
Contrast
Exposure
Focus...."Depth of Field"
Communication.... What do you want the viewer to see or feel without telling them anything.
Hope this helps, it has really been a big part in my photography.

If you are still using a darkroom, it sounds like proper paper exposure, good contrast (filters), and sharpness.

It means good composition, good exposure, good focus.
