The lenght of time depends on the amount of applications received and the deadline for filling the position.
Once you submit your application, call them the next day to see if they had any questions and express your interest in the position and ask if they can tell you when they will be scheduling interviews. This shows that you are truly interested in the position and not simply job shopping.
Once you have been interviewed, it is good to follow up with a hand written thank you note to the interviewer. This gives you another chance to subtly express your interest in working for the company AND will keep your name in the forefront of their mind.
Best of Luck

It can vary depending on the organization. In my previous job, I was the manager of the department. I have to wait a certain amount of time to collect the applications, make a list of potential applicants, give that list to the director for his approval (which could take a week or more) and finally start calling for interviews. Sometimes it would be over a month before I could contact people, which I know was very discouraging. Just because it has been a week or two, doesn't mean you are not being considered. Good luck!

Hi Hon, this is a serious question cuz I applied for a great job at my city that pays $25.00 per hour, part time. Anyway, I applied in May and I finally got a call for a typing test in July! See, they were interviewing people that submitted their application/resumes first and since most of the people were failing tests, and didn't comply with the interview, they then started on the next 50 candidates. See, so don't give up..it may happen to you too. What you can do is call the company and say. .. "Have you made a final decision on the position of ??? yet? You cannot get in trouble and if they ask for your name, it always helps to let them know you are interested. Good luck ! :D

Some might call the minute they get the resume or sometime at the end of the advertisement. Most will toss most resumes in a reject file and only call those with the best qualifications so we never hear from them.
Just send as many out as you find jobs you are qualified for and keep sending forgetting how many have gone before. They are out there but like spreading grass seed you can't expect them all to take root, you pick fertile soil, water and keep trying until you get what you want.

It can be days, weeks, months, or not at all. I have this new thing going on, if I want a job, I will call them back and inquire everyday, and take whatever job I can. Life is to short, good luck with your career endeavors. Kids are wonderful, so at least your got some time with your little ones.
A blessing in disguise if they dont call you right away.

Depends...
Was there a closing date posting on the ad?
If not, I would still give it 1-2 weeks minimum. They need to get a good pool of candidates and then review the resumes to see who they want to bring in for an onsite interview.
I have found that if you include a great cover letter it increases your chances.
Hope this helps! Good luck with the search!

5-7 days is the appropriate time line. If they don't call you call them and be persistent, especially in Public Relations. Don't be afraid of warding them off because the more you bother them the more they know you are a good choice for the position.

Probably within two weeks after the date set for applications to be received.........that is, if you hear at all. I'm afraid it isn't that unusual to get no reply at all. Good luck.
