My dogs bark at EVERYTHING - they feed off each other and it can get quite annoying as you can imagine. I heard that these are safe and more effective than shock collars. anyone had good or bad experiences with them?

Yes, I have had good luck with the citronella collar.
I have a golden male that just LOVED the sound of his own voice and he barked, obnoxiously at everything and nothing.
My vet recommended a citronella collar and after less than two weeks, no more incessant barking.
Be sure to follow the training suggestions that come with the collar.

PS He is now a wonderfully behaved, QUIET 4 yr old darling of a dog.

They are not safer or more effective than shock collars.
Somewhere along the way shock collars have gotten a negative conotation, but I assure you they are in no way cruel. I use them on my dogs to correct certain behaviors and I made a point to try it on myself first. It is not painful, only a surprise, much like spraying your dog with water.
The citronella collars are not that great. Get a good bark collar and set it on a low setting, and trust me, it will work.

Yes, lots of good experience. The surgery I used to work at used them on the odd dog who barked constantly when hospitalised - they work very quickly! I personally think the smell is very nice, but apparently dog's don't. One of the vet's I work with also puts one on her dog occasionally - the dog gets the message fast and doesn't seem perturbed by the collar. Yes, they're definitely more humane than shock collars!!!
