My cat is female, she is 5 years old and has not suffered with this before. Her belly and back legs have almost gone bald, she has been to the vets and they couldn't find anything wrong. I have 4 cats in total, all are spoilt rotten and there are no favouritism issues!!! I have tried a skin irritation cream but that hasn't really worked and I don't know what to try next :(

Thanks for all your answers so quick! My vet did suggest stress, bu we tried a calming plug in (I dont know how good this is) but it has made no difference. Her skin is no different to normal in this area and she has no evience of cuts or anything. We moved in April so maybe it is stress from that but taking a long time to get better. My cats are my babies so I worry I lot!!!!!!

I would take my cat to another vet. It could be sarcoptic mange, a flea allergy, diet, stress, any number of things.

Make the appointment as soon as possible, and in the meantime keep your cat indoors.

Hm, I would normally guess mange but since the vet checked the cat it is obviously not mange. Your cat may be suffering from Alopecia- stress can cause all the hair to fall off and not grow back for quite some time. Did your vet mention the possiblity of Alopecia? There is no treatment but the hair will eventually grow back on it's own. Also, it's best to not let the cat outside because their hair protects them from getting sick. Fleas are also very bad for a cat with Alopecia so make sure she is free of fleas.
One more thing, does her skin look a little different? It may appear to have a weird texture- this is another sign on Alopecia.

How about trying another vet? One things for sure, if a vet couldn't provide an answer, no one on here can - we're not professionals and we haven't even SEEN the cat!

The first thing to address with baldness in these areas is flea allergies - are you regularly using a flea treatment from a vet, like Frontline? Petshop stuff doesn't count!!

It could also be hormonal. See another vet, because you can't get answers from people who haven't examined the animal. Pointless to even ask.

I expact you use frontline already. If you dont one bite from a flea can cause some cats to pull fur.I dont think for one minute its that though, When my baby was born my cat went bald down the back and back legs i caught her after quite some time pulling it out in tufts. She was stressed from the baby coming home.I bought a cat nip room spray and it helped to settle her down. The vet wanted to give anti histamine and mange scrapings and said it could be an allergy or flea allergy but it was stress. She settled after about 6 months.I thought about rehoming as she was very stressed but she adapted. Its 6 years on and she is happy and i have 4 kids now.She probably is stressed at sharing with 3 others but she can and will settle down.Cat nip relaxer spray is excellent i bought it from zooplus.uk

i think you're vet is right, my cat went through the same thing for a little while... her whole back end just kinda went bald, two things.. she was having an allergic reaction to fleas which started the hair loss.. then after the fleas went the hair didn't come back but i had also moved and i watched her and she was licking herself like crazy.. that's why it was her backend and not her head (she obviously can't lick her head) the best thing to do i think is to make sure she's got a good high hiding spot which will make her feel safe.. and get her plenty of attention.. no one likes to favor but you want to destress her so to speak and there's no better destresser then lots of attention..

I am wondering about allergies. One of mine is allergic to the flea preparations. Frontline gives him a big bald spot, and he has an even worse reaction to Stronghold. Problem is, he also has a flea allergy. When I took him in, he was a young stray, with several bald patches, I think because of fleas. If this is the case, you will have to work out which is the lesser of all the evils.
Has she been neutered? Are there any hormone issues?
Purrs to her and the others from my three.

She could be in a state of shock or stress.Give her good care and lots of sleep.
If she goes outside, then she could have gotten hurt by cats, vehicles, people, etc.She could also be sick or shedding in great amounts of fur.
I don't think you should try a cream just yet until you find out what's wrong with her because it could be the cream that's causing it for now.
I also suggest that taking her to another vet just in case.

My boyfriends dog had a problem with bald spots. His vet said it was some extra bacteria in that spot and gave him a salve to use. It was also aggrevated by allergies. He used the salve and some benadryl .. the dog is all better now !
