First, congratulations on having a healthy, 12 year old dog! I have an old girl, too.
Many dogs like to roll in stinky stuff (mine likes to eat it - yuck!). I think the only way you will be able to stop it is to go out and pick up the poop before letting the dog outside. I've learned to pick up after my dog every time she goes. On the plus side, my yard stays nice and clean...
Good luck!

I would suggest taking her out on a leash. You will have more control of where she goes and what she does. Also if she tries to roll while on the leash you will be able to tell her NO! and stop her bad behavior before she does it, and once she learns rolling is unacceptable, perhaps try going out with her without the leash, and if she tries to roll tell her No! If she stops without rolling then Good Girl, but if not, it's back to square one. It may take a few times, but labs are very intelligent dogs, and she should catch on quickly (I hope). Good Luck!

The only way is to either take her out on a leash or into an enclosed area that is free of nasty smelly things. Dogs just love to roll in smelly stuff - they have different aesthetic than we do when it comes to smells.

She might be rolling in poop because she wants to smell like it. Dogs love the smell of things that stink to us. Have a clean area for her to roll in.

Clean up her poop before she rolls in it, or if you are in a park, scope out the area yourself while you keep her on a short chain. Don't slacken the chain or let her off of it until you're satisfied with the area.

Two things, take her out with a leash, but really who has that time. They have the new pooper scoopers where they just open and u can put it in a bag without too much disgust.

It may be kind of late to be teaching an old dog new tricks. The only thing you can do is to scold her when she does it, so that she knows why she is being scolded.

buy a certain spray from the pet store and spray any droppings around her. it's so horrible-smelling to dogs (and not us :D) that she won't want to touch it. if that doesn't work go to the vet, this could be a serious OCD problem.
