Does anyone have a reasonable guess?

For example, I have a friend that tells everyone she's Catholic, because her family is, she went to church a lot growing up, catholic school, etc. The other day we talked about it and she said she really doesn't believe in God. Why is she telling everyone she's Catholic then?

That's kind of hard to test, isn't it?

Sample instrument:

1. Do you believe in God?
2. No, really, do you?
3. Are you lying?

A lot of people in established traditions seem to identify their religion out of loyalty to family or culture, or out of fear of retribution from the community.

There's no way to quantify that information, but I like to think it's a silent majority.

I think some people do it either to fit in or to play a joke.
