New Orleans is over 100 miles inland with the gulf to the south. But it's bordered to the north by Lake Pontchartrain, a major cause of a lot of New Orleans's flooding.

New Orleans is 115 RIVER MILES from the Gulf of Mexico; that translates to about 90 miles as the pelican flies.

It's closer now than before Katrina. I think it's about 15 miles upstream now.
