It all depends. If you live in the south, kingfish is a King Mackerel. If you live in the northeast, a kingfish is known as a king whiting in the south but a kingfish up north. The up north kingfish is in the drum family of fish.

A Kingfish is a widely used term describing different fish in different parts of the world. For example a kingfish in parts of the US is a King Mackeral while in South Africa, a kingfish refers to a Trevally. In Barbados it would be a Copia, in the UK it is a White Croaker.

'Kingfish' also has other meanings that have nothing to do with fishing. There is a band named Kingfish. Kingfish is also the NATO reporting name of an air-fired Soviet anti-ship and strike missile, the Raduga KSR-5 (referred to as AS-6 by NATO).

A kingfish is caricaturized by it's jewelled crown and long flowing fins that drag the bottom. It's also normally accompanied by the queenfish and little prince and princess fishies. Most kingfish don't fight very well though, they leave that up to their knightfish that have heavy plated scales suited for battle.
