I have a large box of brownie mix that's been hiding in my cabinet for over 5 years. There is no expiration date on the box, so is it still safe to use it or should I toss it?

Food always expires and you can not take risks. Browine mix should last longer than fruits and vegetables. The box should have a expiration date. Toss it away if you have doubts or no expiration date.

I've made brownies from a mix I had on my shelf for years and they came out fine. There are three essential elements needed for bacteria to contaminate food. It needs time, moisture and the correct acid balance. Your mix had plenty of time I'll say (LOL). But it does not have any moisture to speak of so I would not worry about bacterial contamination. There's the possibility of tiny little bugs but the heat of the baking will kill them and what's a little more protein more or less. :) Seriously, I wouldn't worry about it. This whole "expiration date" thing has gotten crazy out of hand. The bottom line is bacteria can't survive without moisture.

I would think that because it is all dry mix it would be a non perishable item - therefore probably okay to eat. You may want to taste a little bit of the batter to make sure it tastes alright before you cook it.

Just to be on the safe side though, I would probably just get a new box.

It does expire. Usually the baking powder or baking soda in it goes bad. You will need to add some (just a little, like 1/2 tsp.) to make sure it will rise.

I'm sure that it'll go stale or rancid after a while. Personally I would toss it; it's not that expensive.
