If I am flying to Australia do I need to apply for a visa, or is this done automatically when I buy the plane ticket?

Go to a AAA office with your passports and they will help you out. They punch in your information and it is on file when you get there. We weren't going to be given a printout - they said we didn't need it - but we asked for it anyway.
I don't recall paying anything for it but that might be because we are AAA members.

ETAs are valid for 365 days from the date of grant, or for the existence of the passport if the passport expires under 365 days from the date the ETA become granted.

ETAs are bloody easy to get and are dirt cheap. If you're coming as a tourist, come on an ETA. Otherwise, apply for your appropriate visa.

You need to apply for a visa before you leave. Normally about 2 weeks before you go minimum is recommended to make sure you have no probkems.

You need to apply but it is easy to get a tourist visa. Look at http://www.immi.gov.au for all visa information.

Go to http://www.eta.immi.gov.au/ and buy one, they are $20 AUD and you can pay via credit card. If you need to work out the conversion, go to http://www.xe.com
