You need form 4506 or 4506-T. Both are available from the IRS website (see link below). 4506 is to BUY an actual copy of your return. 4506-T is to request a FREE transcript of your return. This will only have the Federal information from your W-2. If you need state info, you would have to check with your state or the employers. If you need information from more than 10 years ago, your only option is the employers and I don't know if they are required to retain it that long.

I'm not sure if you could get them from the IRS or not. I know you can order copies of your tax returns, so it's possible the W-2 would be included. Sorry, you're probably going to have to call them. This time of year they're the least busy, so the wait time is probably reasonable.

If it's to apply for a loan (like a mortgage) then the computerized copies the IRS can give you will suffice. You can call the customer service 800 number and just ask them to send it to you - no forms required unless you've changed your address since you've filed your last return.

It's commonly expected that a responsible adult would keep his/her tax returns for 7 to 10 years. 7 Is the statute of limitations for and IRS audit and the extra 3 are for your benefit for these kinds of situations. If you have not done so, start this year. You are correct, you can obtain them from the IRS. Be prepared to pay for them. There's a fee for a record search and for each copy plus postage.

they won't have the actual copies - only computerized reports with same info - why didn't you keep copies with your tax return copies??? That drives me nuts when employees don't keep copies.
