You are getting jipped by your mom...... plain and simple. Even if she's your mom it doesn't make it right. P.S. Finish school. People can take lots of things away from you (including your father's SS check) but they can never take away your education. Learn as much as you can....every day of your life.

Your mom is right, but she also has to use that money to take care of you. not for her personel use. You can get this money as long as you go to school, so when you turn 18 that money will come to you not your mother. If you go to college you will be entitled to that money. You need to go on line and check out the social security site so you know the laws, or go down there and ask some questions. Why would you quit if you are that close to getting out?

Well young man or young lady, you need to be in school that check that is for your living expense is the lease of your concerns if you do not finish high school. You will be making $7.00 the rest of your life and eventually wind up in a never ending job with no benefits if you don't graduate. you will never get a head, your almost a legal adult, and in a few you will be so i assume you are thinking like one now, so do the grown up thing and get somewhere in life. and if your not at home tell your mother your writing a letter to the SSA stating that you do not live at home anymore. State where you are living and proof that you are attending school.

The check goes to her as she is suppose to be using it to provide for your needs. Keeping a house over you is one way of providing for you. Why are you not at home? If you are legally in someone elses custody then they are the ones who should be getting the check. Your check will stop at eighteen unless you are enrolled full time in collage and have given them proof of where you live where you go to school, and other information they need to continue your checks. About the ged classes you can go on the social security web site and look it up.

Why would you get his check if you're a minor? You are incorrect, as his wife is a beneficiary. You should finish school, its actually easier than a GED.

Don't rely on the government. I'm sorry about your Dad. You may want to see if he purchased a life insurance policy. If he did, you may be a beneficiary at maturity.

just call social security yourself and see what your rights are because i believe if you stay in school & go to college you may still be entitled for your checks and if your 18 or over they will be your checks and not hers which she may be trying to stop you from getting, sort of like if she cant have the money you aint gonna get it either! So call social security as soon as you can and dont let her know what your doing...something sounds shady to me!

ok same thing happened with me....(might be different because of different states..but heres how it is in illinois)

my mom got the check until i turned 18....then i got it in my name (it was directly deposited into my bank account) until the month after i graduated high school. there were other rules like, i could get it till i was 21 if i lived at home and went to school full time...i think thats wrong, but its something like that

i turned 18 in december..i got the check in my name until june

it would be the same if it was child support. she would get it until u turned 18 (but child support stops after 18). anyways, since ur mom is your legal guardian since u are still considered a minor, she will get it until you are a legal adult.

finish school so you won't regret it. I went through the same thing and got a job instead. I let my mom keep the check and I kept the money I earned from work.

Maybe you're right. Maybe you should get the check.

Then pay for use of your room. Pay for the heat. Pay for the electricity to run the air. Pay for the hot water. Pay for the phone use. Pay for the computer use. Pay for your clothes. Pay for your food. Those things do not just pay for themselves.

You will OWE her money. So, Finish school and go to college.

I think a quick call to the social security office in your area would straighten things out for you. I suggest you give them a call and have them answer all your questions.
