The main reason why the cartoons were so controversial was because they attacked Islam by making fun of him and tarnishing Islam. It wasn't merely a picture of Muhammad; they were satirical, insulting pictures that falsified the image of Muhammad and Islam, and making images of him does just that! If they were just pictures of him, Muslims wouldn't have nearly been outraged, but the pictures were obscene and demeaned Islam--they were no ordinary images.
Imagine depicting Jesus by showing his image was wrong in Christianity. Now depicting him anyway is one thing, but depicting him in a cartoon next to a whole bunch of cartoon prostitutes whose cleavage is explicitly showing is giving the wrong impression of Jesus as well as violating Christianity (if it were a law). Like I said, the cartoons weren't just good 'ol cartoons. They made fun of Islam and Muhammed extensively, and that's where it went too far.
Good luck!

Graven images. Commandment 2.
Exodus 20:4 - Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.
The next verse talks about bowing down to them but there are a number of groups that view the commandment as banning images totally. Our word "iconoclast" comes from the christian groups that broke icons because they felt they should not be allowed in churches. Early protestants banned images of Jesus (including and most importantly the crucifix) and to this day there are protestant churches which have no images of people in the sanctuary.

It's not wrong, per se - there is plenty of Islamic art where the prophet is depicted. The problem in the case of the cartoon was that the characterization was disrespectful.

Showing a prophet's face would risk people of worshiping them over the centuries.

Because God has something against graven images - they are afraid others might start worshipping Mohhamed, like the Catholic worship Mary...

It is idolatry. Muslims take it a little more seriously than Christians take the whole "no graven images" thing

Because the last thing Islamists want you to know is that Mohammed was just an ordinary man.
