If you have to ask the question, chances are very, very good that you are a "backyard breeder." My main concern is that there are thousands and thousands of homeless dogs living in shelters or worse, being euthanized. Please don't continue to make more. Most of your puppies will eventually end up in shelters.

I'd say yes.
Hobby breeders vs. backyard breeders are pretty clear. Hobby breeders rarely have more that two breeds, usually only one. It is hard to really know one breed, let alone 5. Hobby breeders are breeding carefully with an understanding of the bloodlines and potential problems of their chosen breed. They have a purpose for breeding the dogs, such as a better agility dog, or a better show dog, not just producing more puppies to sell.
You don't say if you are playing mix and match with the breeds and producing the so called designer dogs. If so, you are clearly a backyard breeder, because no responsible breeder mixes breeds PERIOD.

yes you are everyone that has answered above me is correct.
how do you know if these dogs are healthy ? the parents may look healthy but still need to be hips, eyes, etc tested.
also are they AKC registered? champion?
if you cant answer yes to all those questions then you are a back yard breeder
there are many dogs in shelters that are healthy , purebreds that are looking for homes.
how do you know your dogs dont end up at a shelter? do you line up owners before you breed? do you ask questions and offer help. will you accept a dog back at any time? do you have spay/neutur contacts with new owners?
sadly you will probably continue to breed because you are not listening to anyone here but just looking for validation from other BYBS.
i love my dog thats why i got him fixed, he will be healthier.
my dog was akc registered, great dog, but not every dog should breed ,i knew i didnt have the time to go to shows and breed .so i made the decision to get him neutured (it was pretty easy i didnt really think twice)

Are You registered with the state as a Breeder. with any organization like UKC or AKC. They keep quality breeders in their data bases so you can trust the breeder to welp quality dogs.If not you would be catgorized as a backyard breeder. There is nothing wrong with what you are doing, but to have that official registration with the state and other organizations helps you and your customers. And if you advertise on the web it helps if people can check your qualifications with someone. I live in Iowa and we have farms that breed quality dogs , but we also catch puppy mills once in a while Good Luck with your dogs,

Sorry, but you will have to overlook some of your answers,as on this site it seems that some on here that answers questions think they're the only ones that can raise a pup and call others who do so a backyard breeder.I don"t see any official awards where these people have won a prize for being a judge. It seems if you raise puppies on here ,you will be tagged as a backyard breeder when they can't even tell you the definition of a backyard breeder.

Sure sounds like it. Don't you know that millions of animals get put to sleep because of puppy mills and people like you? I don't doubt that you care about your animals, as I'm sure you do, but you need to educate yourself. Please stop doing this and find a different job. Giving the dogs away doesn't make it any better. A real breeder would never give a dog away to anyone, they do background checks, they breed for show dogs or service dogs, not just for pets.

I think your are.
You may have AKC papers on all your dogs but have you shown any of them? Have any got their championship through competitions?
Do you use genetics when breeding?
Can you breed in & out negative traits?
Actually you sound more like a puppy mill. With so many breeds & puppies popping up right & left it sounds bad. You may take good care of them but that has nothing to do with genetics & how close they come to meeting the standards of the breed or having pure blood lines.
My opinion.

Good breeders breed 1, maybe 2 breeds, and concentrate on knowing all there is to know about that breed.
You are breeding way too many breeds to be considered a knowledgable breeder. Sorry, but BYB you are.

Gosh, ppl's really lashing out at us breeders, huh? I think some ppl on here fail to realize that if everyone that breeds dogs ONLY bred Ch. bloodlines...hardly any of us would have a dog! Some of these Champion breeders ask $1,500 and up for just a pet puppy! I respect what they do utterally but...if I'm going to be critisized, I might as well point out some very sad yet realistic facts.
As far as your number of dogs...I know I couldn't handle that many but if they are healthy, kept up on flea medication and checked by a vet regularly, they should be fine.
Some Ch. breeders have even more Dogs than that.
Plus, I get a monthy subscribtion to Dog Fancy and have read WAY more than one story of past show dogs ending up in a shelter.
Once the dog gets too old or proves to not be just right on type, they simply discard the poor dog. They do that with their "breeding" prospects too.
lol...Once I get a dog...I keep the dog. It becomes part of me and my family and it would literally be a nightmare if anything ever happened to him/her.
When someone comes to get one of our pups, I make them sign an agreement that if for whatever reason, they are displeased or unable to care for the pup, they have to bring my baby back and I will give them at least half the sell price back....no one's ever brought one back.
I call each person at least twice a year and they ALWAYS say, they couldn't be happier.
I just got randomly snapped at and called a backyard breeder. I went & looked at the guys profile and I could tell he has nothing better to do than sit on his butt and smart off to ppl he doesn't even know.
Contrary to what he believes, my Pugs are disease free, healthy, plump n happy. We only have ONE litter a yr. I give out birth certificates and everything. BAckyeard, my butt...these dogs have softer beds than we do!!!
I also keep in close contact with my buyers and EACH ONE OF THEM ARE QUITE SATISFIED with my pups.
I sell 'em for cheap too considering how some ppl sell pet Pugs for $700 and up.
I just want our babies to get good, permanent homes.
You could ask anyone that has purchased a pup from me....I absolutely BALL my eyes out when each one leaves.
Sorry but...I'm just hurt that someone had the gull to jump down an innocent persons throat.

Unfortunately, yes.
Give them away? Unacceptable. Screen owners carefully, ask nosy questions, and sell the pups only to good homes.
Do you screen your dogs for health? Hopefully, you know what that means, and hopefully, your answer is yes, and hopefully your dogs are clear of hereditary diseases such as entroption and hip and elbow dysplasia.
Do you feed premium foods? Hopefully, yes, to produce sound and healthy pups.
