It kind of depends on how popular the model is and how many they have in stock. If it is a model that sells as soon as it hits the lot, you may be lucky to get any discount at all. If they have a big supply you can get a better deal. Also are you buying at the end of the model year. Now you can get big discounts on the 2007 trucks because the 2008 models are coming in. If you are a buying a GM, Ford or Chrysler you should be able to buy a 2007 below invoice. On a new one if you bargin hard you should get a few hundred over invoice. To find out dealer costs check out edmonds.com. Don't be afraid to ask to see the dealer invoice. If the dealer won't work with you be prepared to walk out and continue shopping. Last year I bought a new Nissan Titan at close out for $2000 behind invoice and got a rebate on top of it.

One last thing it's usually not up to the salesman to determine the price you get, one of the managers will do the final pencil.

Good luck

Understand that the dealer does need to make money on what they sell. If you go into it expecting that they will make nothing off of you, then they won't want to be very accommodating and will feel they are wasting their time on you. The best way in my opinion to pay the least is honesty. Tell your salesman up front that you want the best deal, and that you will not commit to his offer until you've compared it elsewhere. Ask him to be honest and tell you how much profit he wants to make off of you and that you expect an honest answer. It probably depends on how expensive of a truck you'd like to buy, but a cheaper truck should be a good, fair deal at about $1000 profit. A more expensive, or loaded up truck, say with leather or a diesel, should include $1500 profit. Lots of dealers do want more than this yet, and that's not unreasonable on their part, but will be willing to bend, after all $1000 bucks is still better than no bucks, right?

Tips: To get your truck for even less markup, buy something they need to get rid of... a dealer does have to from time to time, make no money or even lose money to get rid of something that just won't sell. They also go by age on the lot, deal on the truck that's been there longest, that's the one they want gone the most.
Also, don't cave in on extra's after you make a deal. Lots of dealers make more money on the extras than they do on the deal! Documentation fees are crap, pure markup. The only justifiable extra fees should be scrap tire fees in some areas and registration/ppsa fees that set a lien against your new truck if you financed with them. If you didn't finance with them, don't pay it. All the other stuff the finance office will offer you contains alot of markup. I don't want to say you don't need it, because things like life/disability insurance or warranty are good things in themselves, they just have lots and lots of markup in them is all, deal on those even harder than your truck if you want them.

Usually, depending on the dealership and age of the salesman, you can usually get him slightly below the bottom of the front bumper.

What are you asking, do you want to "go down" on your car salesman? If so, just make him an offer.

most newer pickups have about $5000 markup over dealer invoice. this is built into the window sticker for the dealer. lowball him and see what his response is and take it from there. or just tell him you will give $500 over actual dealer invoice.
be creative.

UNLESS THE GENERAL MANAGER IS YOUR BROTHER THEN I WOULD SAY NOT LOW ENOUGH BECAUSE AT THE END THE DEALER WILL WIN UNLESS YOU REALLY DO YOUR HOMEWORK AND LEARN TO NEGOTIATE.
