You should feed your parakeet bird food, but also let him eat with you at breakfast and maybe dinner. My bird loves to eat bananas and orange juice. Just avoid caffeine, chocolate, and avocados.

Use Roudybush pellets. It's made with crushed apple and parakeets love them, plus a variety of veggies, fruit, pasta, and meat. Treat your keet like a child and you should have a long living bird. Mine has eaten everything i eat and it's 28 yrs old. I have other birds that have a clean bill of health according to blood results that are done every year. The more variety of food you feed, the more vitamins, minerals and proteins your bird gets the longer your bird lives. If you feed it a seed diet it will live about 4-6 yrs, and pet stores bank on that, so they can keep selling you the seed diet and sell you another bird in a shorter period of time, that's what makes them the most money. They bank on it every week to make them more money.

Stay away from chocolate, avacados, fruit pits and seeds, and any caffiene products and your bird should be good to go.

Good Luck!

Please buy a good seed not retail store foods. They are low in nutrition. I use higgins seed. I also feed a mix of veggies that were frozen and I thaw them. Any fruit is good but not avocados. Brown rice cooked it great too. Join a yahoo group for parakeets so you can ask questions. They are great.

You should probably feed your parakeet seed or if you can find it some pellet food which is less in fat.

Variety is the spice of life - so offer seeds, pellets, fresh fruits and veggies, chopped hard-boiled eggs (chicken eggs) and almost anything that is healthy for humans.

NO chocolate, caffeine, avacados and fruit seeds of any kind! Stay away from salt and sugary items also.
