Ok...so I see a lot of people talking about Mormon's "magic underwear" not even knowing what the heck it's about.

The "magic underwear" is actually a t-shirt and shorts that we wear under our regular clothes.

Does that help you out any?

Like pendants worn by early Christians for protection by God, the "magic underwear" works the same way....but we just wear it under our clothes instead of a shiney piece of Gold with a symbol and precious stones for protection...

Bart...buddy...I may not be baptized, I may not know what the protection is for(I know where it comes, but keeping our promises to God), but that's the best way I can explain it...that the underwear is like wearing an amulet of protection or something...that's just how I see it.

Brian, buddy. I admire your ambition to defend what you know to be true, however if I were you, I'd wait until I actually experienced the things that you are trying to defend so you don't seem foolish like you don't know what you are talking about.

Get endowed, then defend the garment.

Concerning Mormon "garments" the question has been adequately covered by those here in the answers by those who know the reasons for the "garments". The question was very well answered by several different persons.

The real point of interest, that should be considered, is the strange if not truly weird responses, of the human being. By observing the many different ways people think provides an insight to the human mind. With so many, much more important subjects to be considered, in the effort of "learning", why waste so much time on answering much less asking such ridiculous questions? It really does appear many have nothing better to do then to hang around such web sites for an attempt to receive attention. Perhaps it is also a game of whom can be the "dumbest" in asking truly foolish questions.

Just remember these are the upcoming generations that will take over the operation this planet some day.

The protection comes in the form of it being a constant reminder of our covenants with God. Contrary to urban myths, the temple garment will not stop bullets, knives, or anything of that nature.

We wear our garments under regular clothes as to not draw undue attention to them. When I when through the temple the first time, I was unaware of how many people were obsessed with my underwear. Should I start asking others if they wear boxers, briefs, or go commando? NO! It's none of my business (and it may cause an information overload should someone answer).

1. Brian is getting baptized next month, so cut him some slack.

2. Why is the concept of temple garments so hard to understand to non-LDS? You accept why a Catholic priest or Nun wears their holy garments right?! Same thing for us Mormons.

3. And the protection comes in many differnet forms. But I know that protection comes from Father and it feels great. The temple garment is a reminder to me of the covenants I made with Father 16 years ago. They are not "magical." The protection comes from the holy priesthood.

4. Any other serious questions? Post a question or email me.

I will tell you this, the only "power" the Gaments that I wear have, is in the covenant that they represent. They will not stop a bullet or prevent harm from coming to me. However, the covenant that I have made with God, will keep me from going into places where harm can come to me. The power of protection comes from the covenant. It is annoying that people who don't understand or can not comprehend, mock what I find sacred. What I don't understand is that they don't ask any other religion to explain their religious garments. Why do you feel the need to only ask Mormons about theirs? Why not ask the Orthodox Jew, or Greek Orthodox?

The underwear is symbolic and related to a LDS ceremony. Wikipedia has an interesting treatise on the ceremony, the underwear and their history. A Google search will give you many other references.

Not magic but a sacred symbol of commitment and dedication and divine protection.

Devout Hasidic Jews wear a prayer shawl as a piece of "underwear" but no body ridicules them( except maybe antisemites and those irreligious who are not afraid to be called antisemite or antiJewish)

What other people wear under their clothes( exept hairshirts and masochistic things that can bring people to emergency rooms) is nobody elses business.

Oh man, and I was thinking the magic just hadn't kicked in yet... bummer..

It's funny how people can be so obsessed with underwear! Especially when they really have no idea why we wear this certain kind or what it symbolizes!!

Oh well.

Ok.....but UNDERWEAR??

Why on earth underwear, why not just a symbol of something (like the cross or the jewish magen david) that you can wear around your neck or something??

Well, stranger things exist than this, I guess.

Thanks, James O and LDS Mom.....

Exactly right.

It constantly surprises me the energy people expend obsessing about others' underthings...

It surprises me the energy people expend mocking others' religion and sacred objects- whether those objects be underwear or strings of beads, prayer shawls or prayer rugs.

I truly wish people would grow up and start working to solve bigger problems.
