AND, wouldn't you have thought it horribly controlling and suspect of your family's religion if it prevented your family from eating or socializing with you just because you became a JW?

thanks Shellback, I sincerely appreciate your concern. I feel this is a good forum to raise awareness of the underbelly of something that seems so innocent and righteous and may be helpful to anyone considering it as a way of life.

I have mentioned this before, I grew up as a Jehovah's Witness, and at around 15 or so I decided this was not for me. It took me quite a while to find God in my life again and no it is not with this same religion. Me and my family are members of the Church of Christ and at first my dad had more of a problem I think. He just could not believe that I would do such a thing! He even questioned me thinking I did not know what I was doing, and it was a every day argument concerning religion, he would even call me at work to start in on me. My mom has finally excepted it, at first she would not speak with me or see my son. They both finally realize that I have not made a bad choice in my life. I think it may have opened their eyes. But at first it was as if they had disfellowshipped me and threw me aside. You know that is what this religion does which I think is awful to begin with. But, that's my story, :) Be Blessed PediC :)

My mother had been Catholic before she became a JW. Her Catholic family still talked to her but when her father died and she refused to attend the funeral in the Catholic Church, it caused a rift because some of her Italian aunts were appauled at her decision. But all my mother kept saying was, "You know what the WT teaches: if I'm caught in another church when Armageddon comes, Jehovah won't save me."

So, she stuck to her guns and would not go into the church, although she did attend the grave side service afterward, which to me was silly because the priest officiates both services. Whether or not she was in the church, she was still listening to what she considered "false religion" because she was listening to the priest at grave side. Even as a Child I realized that didn't make sense.

I would touch it with a 10 foot pole Pedi C but you already know what I think of the JW's and I am not an ex-JW. Just some friendly advice. Do not let your anger at them consume you because if you do then they will have won.

They are the only ones I have ever heard of that practice treating others like garbage, or as you put it, shunning. I wonder what kind of answers you will get....
