my meditation usually starts out with focusing on breath, and degenerates into 'i have a frank the bunny complex' i gotta fix that pond,' 'dinner?'.....'oh crap! I forgot volleyball again!'

Since Egyptians believed that thoughts came from their hearts, did they get heartburn from overthinking?

The aim (I think) is to dissociate the conscious mind from the flow of thought, so that you are not thinking in the sense of being involved in your thoughts, but sitting back watching the thoughts go by like ripples in a stream.

I think about breath. I focus on the moment, which is best characterized by what is going on for me at the time. If other thoughts come to mind, I notice that they've arisen, then gently go back to noticing my breath. It takes a while to get used to, but it is among the most effective ways to relieve anxiety, i.e., worry about things over which we have no control.

Well, I don't try to think about anything. Some thoughts come to mind that I try to observe more than really think on. Usually it helps me figure out what's bothering me.
