I was wondering if you can rent a place temporarily or something, because a hotel is too expensive. I'm going to southern california........

If you want to go cheap, look into hostels. You can often reserve in advance, pay less than $20 a night, and they are often in great locations. You have to share a room but that's tollerable in exchange for the money you save. They have kitchens so you can do your own cooking to save money. I'm aquainted with the San Diego ones downtown and in Pt.Loma/Ocean Beach and both are great locations. Also a good way to meet people. Although mostly young people, there are people of all ages.

This locator map should point you in the right direction http://www.hostelhandbook.com/usa/ca.htm

The Oakwood (Corporate Housing) organization is about the only game in town, for short term leasing. (I think the minimum in L.A. is one month) They have beautiful facilities all over the city but they are not cheap. It's what an IBM type guy would use if he had a temp project in L.A. or something like that.

Not for 2 - 3 weeks. You can stay at an extended stay hotel, but that will not cost less than, say, a cheapo hotel.

You could stay at youth hostels.

Go to the Oakwood Apartments website. They have various locations throughout the city and rent nice apartments on a monthly basis.

most major newspapers list vacation rentals. Try the LATimes. www.latimes.com/classified and click on vacation rentals. BUT most of those will cost more than a cheap motel. You can try Motel 6's. They usually have the best rates.

I would try priceline.com cause you can enter your price and it will find any hotels or whatever in the area within your price range. I actually just used that on my recent trip to Cali too...
