My son is not quite three, but is rapidly outgrowing his 4T stuff. The stores seems to have very few items in the 5T size (and underwear doesn't appear to come in 5T at all). When I head into the boys' department, the smallest size is also a size 5, but seems larger...maybe?

Again, because I cannot find a lot of 5T stuff for comparsion, I'm a little confused. For reference, I shop at normal places like Old Navy, Target & Mervyn's.

Our biggest problem is pants. They seem to fit at the waist but be over six inches too long! My son is not think but fairly lean.

Sorry, mean to type "thin" instead of "think".

Wow, judging from some of your answers, I guess my son is bigger than I thought. He turns three in a month and his 4T shirts are short enough to nearly show his belly.

I think that they are actually very close in size. From what I see it appears that 5T have more elastic waist bands ect maybe they are easy to work for younger children? But I know that in my kids 5T appears to be the same size as regular 5. One more thing that I noticed was 5T appear to be cheaper since they are in the toddler department once you go to regular sizes they clother gets more and more expensive.

My daughter is getting into the 'girls' sections as opposed to the toddler section now too. In the youth sizing, XS = size 4/5, S = 6/6x, M = 7/8, L = 10/12. There are toddler sizes that go up to 4T, 5T, but youth sizes also run 4, 5, etc. I never noticed that, so I have all toddler sizes in those numbers for my daughter. I've also noticed that a lot of youth 4/5 is smaller than 5T. My daughter is still fitting in many size 5T shirts, but in the youth section a size 4/5 will be too small.

No Size 5 and 5T are both different sizes, however some places care 5xs for boys, which seems to be pretty close to the 5T size. I understand, I too have a boy who just turned 4 last month. He is in the 5T or 5xs size as well. Good luck, but really try the 5xs, those fit better than the 5T, plus some of them have little adjustable waist in the 5xs

I buy most of my son's clothes from Old Navy. The jeans fit him good b/c they have an adjustable waist. They look like regular jeans from the outside (not elastic) but Inside the waist is an elastic strap w/buttons you can tighten or loosen. For shirts, a size 5 in boys (Old Navy) is quit a bit wider and broader through the shoulders than the children's 5T, but not much longer. (which is odd) Your right, They don't seem to carry as many sizes 5T but they do have them.
Your son does sound tall/big for his age. My son is 4 1/2 & wears 5T at Old Navy
I have also seen online at Old Navy that they carry husky or slim. Haven't seen them in stores, though

5T is not the same size as 5. My daughter wears 4 and 5 T shirts but in pants she has to wear 4xs in the girls dept because she needs the waist to be smaller and the length longer. a 5T in pants is too big around the waist and too short in the leg. so we go and get the smallest they have in the girls dept. until you get into the bigger boys sizes 7,8 and ect they are basically the same.

After a 4T comes children's size 5. a 5T is smaller than a 5 but 5T is very rare. try children's XS. They are often smaller than 5 but not always.

No it is not the same. My son is 4 and he wears 5 in boys. If I get him 5T it will be too short on him. boys clothes are typically longer and dont come with as much elastic.
