Every day that I come here to R&S I learn more.
I don't think I really realized how much Atheists are slammed for their beliefs. I just naively thought it was mostly Christians.
Hearing what has been said to Atheists and those of other beliefs really makes me MAD!!!
The worst comment I ever heard was, " Well, if I have to spend eternity in heaven with people like most Christians, I rather go to hell."
That made me hang my head in shame, I can tell ya.

I've heard several really hateful comments about my religion. But when I was a kid, an adult approached me in a neighborhood park and told me that I was going to burn in hell because I came from a Catholic family. I was told I'd burn beside the Pope and hear him screaming next to me for all eternity and that his eyes would turn into glowing coals while he roasted in hell. I was just a little kid, pre-school age. The adult was shaking me by my shoulders and grabbing my face to force me to look into their eyes. It freaked me out. At the end of the rant, they said, "When you find Jesus, you'll thank me for this someday." Well, someday has come and gone, and I haven't thanked them for traumatizing me yet.

Uhh....in high school the new band director's husband called me an idiot because I was trying to help a girl get to her correct spots...he wouldn't apologize.
I quit the band, actually got suspended because I wrote a letter telling the band director she is a horrible person, knows nothing about music or marching band(she got a degree in chorus instruction) and should move back to the place where she lived....later I egged her house with almost 200 eggs....yeah, I hold a grudge...

Well I am not catholic but i dated a catholic guy for a while in college and his grandmother referred to me as "the tramp with no morals" simply because i was not the same religion as them (I am Christian though). I don't know if it is an insult directly to my religion but i took it as one since she is saying that i have no morals!

It's generally that I belong to a "false" religion or a cult and that I will go straight to hell.
It doesn't affect me at all except that I tend to feel bad for people who are so willfully ignorant.

Well, you know, I'm regularly compared with Stalin, Hitler, and Mao. Although, I've told told that I'm worse than Hitler, because Hitler was open about his evilness, whereas I pretend to do good.
Then someone emailed me to say s/he was going to enjoy being in Heaven knowing that I would be suffering in Hell. Kind of sadistic, huh?
Neither one really affect me.

When my parents say that they disown me because I'm an Atheist, they then take it back after a few days until the following year when they say it again.

From a Christian: Your parents are in hell.
From a Christian: If you don't believe like I do, you're going to hell.
From my Christian mother-inlaw to my daughter: If you continue reading Harry Potter, you'll wind up in hell.

It was to my daughter. Those are more hurtful than ones directed to me. They found out we were Atheists and asked "Do you wish you had a family that knew how to love?"
