I grew up in a small town where if a funeral was on your road you pulled your car over as a sign of respect and let them go by. The other day I was driving down the highway and passing on the left, didn't realize until the very front of the line that I was passing a funeral procession. In town I always pulled over for funerals, but what about highway travel? And even in town, does anyone see this being done any more? People get mad and honk even if I pull over for an ambulance or fire truck any more, so I don't know what kind of reaction I'd get for pulling over for a funeral. Anyone know what the proper etiquette is here?

Where I live we pull over, usually the driver gets out of his vehicle and takes of his hat. At a work site everyone stops working and holds still until the last vehicle passes.

You can easily pass a funeral procession on the left, since they drive slower on the right. If you wait for them, you will easily hold up a ton of traffic and make a ton of enemies.

But, always pull over for emergency vehicles! It's the law!

I would say it depends on traffic conditions. At the very least you need to make sure you don't change lanes and "join" the procession. Yield to them at intersections, letting the entire procession pass before you cross or turn into that lane.

On the road, safety is the first thing. So if you can pull over safely then do so; otherwise, drive normally.

(By the way, unnecessary honking is illegal. So if someone honks at you for yielding to an emergency vehicle, write down their plate number and report them.)

If you can pull over it is the utmost sign of respect.

I would say small rural highway - still pull over.

Larger highway with a median don't pull over.

Keep doing what you are doing.
The body in the hurst is getting its final journey, if we can not respect that then what will we ever respect?
