I got a ticket thru mail yesterday for red light violation. It came with 4 photos of my car. It was taken by an automated photo red light camera. 1st photo reflects that I stopped behind the limit line and 2nd photo reflects that I made a right turn with no pedestrians, bicyclists and other vehicles. The photos show the whole intersection. It does not have a "No Turn On Red" sign nor a red arrow light. Why did I still receive this ticket? Could it be a mistake? What should I do? Please provide the steps.

Contact the department that sent it to you. Mistakes do happen.

If you received directly from the court, try contacting the department with jurisdiction.

You could simply show up for the court date and argue the case there. I am pretty sure that the paperwork you received gives you that option. Before you do, go to the intersection and take some more pictures to verify your claim about the absence of a no-turn-on-red sign. Then use the contact information on the summons and schedule a court date. There was a time that a lot of these type of tickets were dismissed because the makers of the lights got a bonus for every person that paid for a ticket. That was argued to be enough of an incentive for the lights to catch people that may or may not have been at fault.

If there is no sign prohibiting a right turn on red and right turns on red lights are allowed in your state and locality, the pictures would be proof that you did not break the law. Check out the intersection again and keep the photos as your defense against the ticket.

Somewhere on the ticket there should be a description of your options. If not, go to the traffic department in your city hall and obtain information on how you can dispute the charge.

You can call the office for explanation. If you are satisfied and feel like you made a mistake, pay the fine. But if you think it was mistake, you can fight in court against your case. Good luck!!

In some areas, it is illegal to make a right turn on red unless there is a sign posted that says you can.
