I am a former theist, current agnostic/atheist.
I have meet a few people who are 'former atheists'
usually, they fall into one of two categories
either
1) they were 'soft' atheists. they simply described themselves as such, but they had never really given religion much thought.... they were only atheist as a default position. In much the same manner as some people describe themselves as C of E, even though they only go to church for hatches, matches and dispatches. these sort of people are ripe for proselyting, as they have no intellectual ammunition to challenge the theists spurious arguments
2) they suffered a trauma - such as a death of a loved one - and couldn't, mentally, face the prospect never seeing them again.
{edit} I am aware of the alpha course, it is basically psychological indoctrination. in a very broad and basic sense, you could call it 'christian brainwashing'

I experienced a set of philosophical epiphanies (which I did not equate to spirituality/religion at the time) that I later realized coincided with a lot of pagan philosophies. I still approach spirituality more from a philosophical and skeptical vein than one of "belief."

I started talking to my friend about Nichiren Buddhism and realised that the beliefs and philosophy matched the way I'd been feeling my entire life.
Mind you, I still don't pray to a God, or believe in a God, 'cause that's not what Buddhism's about.

I was an atheist, I absolutely dispised Christians and saw them as stuck-up hypocrites. My wife somehow talked me into an Alpha course. I hated it, so I decided to read the bible myself to catch out these "deluded Christians" running the course. One night I was in the sitting room and my wife was in the outhouse exercising. I was reading the gospel of John about the death of Jesus. Suddenly The whole house filled with...what I can only describe as liquid love...I knew I was not alone. I felt dirty and wanted to wash but found myself praying and weeping to God and asking Him to forgive me of my terrible past and the aweful things I'd done. I heard my wife coming in and tried to compose myself. I dried my eyes and tried to look cool, her eyes were red and it transpired that exactly the same experience happened to her.
This experience and other amazing supernatural things happened to us both over the next 3 weeks until we couldn't stand it any longer and asked God to let us return to normal. God existed, we couldn't deny it. I now have spent my life trying to get to know this awesome God who loves me so much.
