My laptop had flown at least 50K miles every year, TSA has never checked my PC for its contents. Occasionally, they would ask me to boot the computer, however, nowadays, TSA uses some sort of wipe to see if your computer has trace of explosives. I haven't seen anyone had to open the laptop at least in the last year or so. In some small airports, you may still need to boot up the computer though.

Even though I hear horror stories about TSA and cops, I do not think they would check the software on your laptop.

There *was* this thing with the RIAA suing college students for downloading songs, but I do not think anyone will check what is already in your laptop.
