I don't know which operating system you are using but the following statement s are true for just about all of them.
The general answer to this is you need more memory, both in the computer and on the vidoe card.
If the computer Freezes its because it has to large of a load and either the CPU is not fast enough of the machine doesn't have enough memory to suspend the other applicaiton to memory.
If your computer has a onboard video chip and shard memory you can go into the bios and increase the amount of shared memory.
Guidelines Windows 98 128mb Ram Reccomended 512Mb better.
Windows XP 256mb Ram Recommended 1GB Better
Windows ME 256mb Ram Recommended 1GB Better
Windows NT 256mb RAm Recommended 1GB Better
Windows Vista 1GB Recommended 2GB Better 4GB Preferred
Video Cards- Standard application IE, Quickbooks, and Microsoft office and others like this
128mb Recommended 256mb ram Better
Gaming 256mb Recommended 512mb Better
So you must take into account what you are doing and what you currently have and adjust accordingly.
If you are running Windows XP ME you can turn of the Themes use the old windows classic desktop and change the system performance to operate better for progams then background services.
This con be done in the control panel, System, Advanced Tab, the under performance click on best performance.
Also Right click on the empty desktop click on propeties choose desktop, choose windows classic, no background, just a solid color.
And for pete sakes clean up all those shortcuts from the desktop, they may be handy but the require memory to leave them sit there.
Well there you go.
Sorry for any spelling errors, spell check not working.

Why does it freeze? Because it's Windows and Windows does that by itself. There could also be other issues, like virus/malware, background processes hogging the CPU, memory shortage, virtual memory not set up correctly, and so on. Also, if you're running Windows XP on anything slower than a Pentium III or Athlon processor or Vista on a Pentium 4 or Athlon XP processor, you may not have enough processor speed to really run the operating system adequately.

Try installing more physical RAM (at least 512MB for XP, and 1GB for Vista) and set your virtual memory to higher levels (I leave my minimum in Windows 2000 and XP at 512MB and maximum at 4095MB).

Windows is eating up your processor.

try to update the RAM. Do a disk cleanup. then defragment it.

If your computer is old, you might need to add more RAM to handle several apps at once and go faster. go to crucial.com to detect your ram and see how much it would cost to upgrade (you want 512-1 gig) Run AVG antispyware too to make sure you are free from adware/ spyware. update, scan, apply all actions to remove the stuff it finds.
