We're moving 1700 miles and have 2 dogs and 5 cats. We will have to stay in hotels for two nights - how do we find hotels that will accept them? Motel 6 advertises that they are pet-friendly, but say they only allow 1 pet per room. We plan on getting two rooms, one for the cats and one for the dogs. Any advice or experience is appreciated.

well, you are in for an advernture. When I moved from Arizona to Texas I had one cat and one dog in my car and that was enough. I stayed at Motel 6 and as soon as I let the cat out of her carrier she went into this little crawl space behind the bed and I never saw her again. It took some work to get her out of there by the time I was ready to leave in the morning. So be careful where you let them out!
Are you rich? Can you afford seven rooms? If not, you may have to go to plan B. Here are some other places to check:

Good luck! You sound like a great pet owner. I'm sure you know that all your pets will need some time to get used to their new surroundings before letting them outside!

The dogs may be happy to be in a new room but the cats may go and hide under the bed, pee or poop to make themselves calm down. If you have them in cat carriers, they would probably feel better staying in them, in the car at night as long as it isn't too hot and you feel ok about leaving them there.

Alternatively, you could put one dog in each room and bring the cats in their carriers and leave them inside. I don't know what constitutes 1 pet per room but maybe this would be ok with motel 6......

They need to use the litterbox so I would get them used to being on leash. Try something like the walking jacket because it is much more secure and safer than a regular harness (http://metpet.com/shopsite_sc/store/html/walkingjacket.html).

Cats will actually go on leash if they aren't too stressed or frightened. They need someplace quiet like behind bushes or behind a building where there is sand or soft dirt or some mulch.

Otherwise, you need to take a litterbox or two with you disposable or just the regular kind.

If you use a website that tells you which hotels and motels take pets, you still need to call up each place because they change their policies on pets from time to time. I would also make sure you have microchipped all of them just in case, have collars and tags on them and current photos and medical histories of all.

Good luck, it sounds like it will be very interesting.

Good luck, you may wish to consider if the temperatures are low enough keeping some of the animals in your vehicle over night. Just make sure the temperature will not be too hot for them and provide food and water. Many hotels have a limit as to how many and what kid of animal is allowed in a room. Some will only allow caged animals. Look around for other possibilities, maybe a campground with rental units.

My mother-in-law has found some pet friendly Best Westerns as well. You might check with that chain also. They might work with you on your circumstances as well. You can also look into boarding facilities in towns where you will be stopping in a pinch, though I realize that is a pain and expensive.

Go to petfriendly.com (or .org?) and you can see all hotels that take pets. You can also map out your route to list all the ones along your way. It's a very cool service!
