the vet said it is a cross between a lab and pit bull. It is only about 10 weeks old and it looks more and more like a pit. It is the sweetest dog and my nephew is doing a great job with training and socializing the puppy. I am so afraid with all the news about pit bulls turning bad that this dog has the potential to be like some of the pitbulls you here about on the news. His youngest brother is 14, so no little ones in house. Would you keep this dog or be on the safe side? He is a very nice dog.

If you do decide to keep it, I would alter him before he reaches sexual maturity. They usually don't become aggressively dominant until they reach sexual maturity.

Good training and lots of love and affection. I have known many pit bulls and only a few that I met were the ones that would make you cross the street.

The ones you hear about in the news are the ones that are raised by people to be "aggressive" or "watch dogs" or by people who don't provide enough discipline and structure in their day to day life. Sounds like your nephew is doing fine.

not only are 99.999% of pits just wonderful SAFE FAMILY dogs, but a good percentage of the ones you hear about on the news ... are not even pits. Joe Citizen usually is crap at propperly identifying dogs by breed. I would keep the dog. I actually have a rottweiler pit bull cross sleeping her way through an afternoon at home right now.

Even full blooded pit bulls are NOT bred to attack people, nor were they ever used for this in normal circumstances. At worst, they were used to fight each other, or other dogs - and any decent breeder or trainer certainly does not breed or train for this any more.

If this dog is good natured, well socialized and treated well, he will be a great pet and no more likely to bite anyone than a cocker spaniel would.

Very nice that your nephew took this dog in, he will be rewarded by the dog's complete love and loyalty, belive me.

Those pit bulls you hear about on the news were not well trained or socialized and they were likely showing signs of bad temperaments when they were very young.

If this puppy has a good temperament now and is being trained and socialized, he's not going to suddenly turn bad for no reason. Sounds like your nephew is doing a great job with this puppy he found and he should be allowed to keep him.

KEEP IT!!!! Lab pits are the best, cutest dogs ever! Look and see that his feet are webbed to ensure he has lab in him and if he does it drastically decreases the chance it will be violent. Plus the socialization and good training should take all the rest out. Good luck and thx for rescuing the baby. Enjoy!!!

I would not hesitate to keep a pitbull. A well trained dog of ANY breed, even pitbulls are not going to end up on the news.
The only problem with this breed is that many irresponsible owners get them to look 'tough' and they end up messing the dog up, either through improper training or complete lack of training, but this can happen to any breed.

the dog is young enough to be raised correctly. its not the dog, its the idiot owners that turn these dogs into monsters. just make sure that when anyone asks, you say its a lab mix. (this will help avoid any ignorant discrimination) i have had pit bulls in my house as foster dogs and they were the sweetest things.

I have 5 pits and I have had them with kids from 1 year old on up and I would trust a pit with a child.
If he continues to socialize it and train it correctly then the dog should be absolutely fine.
I trust them more than german shepherds and dalmations, and chows

Its all about how the dog is trained. the government and well society has outlawed pitts in many states just because they are what are mainly used in dog fighting... which is wrong. there is no reason that he should not keep the dog at this point as long as he understands the risks of dogs in general. I say good luck and have fun. Dont believe everything you see or read in the world....;)
