I certainly don't like soybean meal being the second ingredient, or the large amount of grains. And what's with the "powdered cellulose"?

Nope, not for me.

I cook for one of my dogs, the rest are on an assortment of kibbles....for now.

EDIT: Well, there ya go. I wouldn't feed Science Diet if it was free, the stuff is crap.

Of the kibbles I'm feeding, a couple of my dogs are on Instinct http://www.naturesvariety.com/content.lasso?page=1465&-session=naturesvariety:C667AC09167cb20936MlQ29FFACA (or Orijen http://www.championpetfoods.com/orijen/about/ when I can't get the Instinct) , the rest are on Kirkland Chicken and Rice due to budgetary restrictions. Not a "top of the line" food, but better than most and certainly better than more expensive foods like Science Diet, Iams or Purina. Corn-free too!

I would have to say no,
1) the first ingredient on the list is meat, which is great, but its inclusive of its water content, so by weight there is only about 20% of that that goes into the kibble, so it really should not be the first ingredient on the list, once water is taken out.
2) second ingredient is soybean meal:(which sound really be put as the first one, since the first ingridient, with water taked out will weight less than this) Soybean meal s "a poor quality protein filler. The 'Crude Protein' analysis on pet food labels is only a measurement of the amount of nitrogen in a food -- not the quality of the protein. Because of this, pet food companies can use the cheaper by-products of human food production, such as Soybean Meal. Meat is always the best source of quality protein. Meat protein is better absorbed and retained and is higher in essential amino acids like methionine, arginine, and taurine. Soybean Meal has a biologic value less than 50% of Chicken Meal. Some allege that soybeans are the #1 allergy of dogs."
3) Brewers rise, is bad quality grain, its a by product of the rice mills, and its basically a processed rice product that is missing many of the nutrients contained in whole ground rice and brown rice thus reducing the quality.

Overall, doesn't seem like there is enough meat in this food, and it uses fillers and has poor quality grains

I feed :Innova, also great are innova evo and canidae

how about this dog food

Naturapet Innova EVO Red Meat
Beef, Beef Meal, Lamb Meal, Potatoes, Egg, Sunflower Oil, Buffalo, Lamb, Venison, Beef Cartilage, Natural Flavors, Herring Oil, Apples, Carrots, Garlic, Tomatoes, Vitamins/Minerals, Cottage Cheese, Dried Chicory Root, Ascorbic Acid, Lecithin, Rosemary Extract

All anyone could ever ask of you is to buy the best that you can afford.

I wouldn't feed it to my dogs.. Don't like the Soybean meal, the barley, the pork fat, brewers rice, whole grain oats, natural flavour, and copper sulfate. And the fact that it says merely ' fish oil '

The apples etc are so far down there they don't add any real benefit..Your food is made up mostly of soybean meal.. That lamb as the first ingredient means nothing as it is added as wet weight, so it appears to make up the most of the bag..

Okay, I'm just going to go simple.

Soybean is a No for dogs. Soybean, wheat, and corn are the Number One allergens for dogs.

There is a movie called "Do you know what's in your pet's food" on the HealthyPetNet website. They also have a comparison chart where you can learn about the ingredients.

If you are this close to a holistic food, go all the way. My favorite is definitely the HealthyPetNet brand.

I do animal rescue and have used quite a variety of holistic foods for the last ten years. I've used HealthyPetNet for the last two years. Hands down, it's the best. P.S. Holistic Vet "dogtorj" (http://dogtorj.net) includes it in his "top pet foods" list and he doesn't sell any of the foods, so when I saw this food on his original "top three" list, I snatched it up.

Terrible! If the list is that long, you can only imagine the damage it's doing to your dog's stomach. A great diet for a dog would be to home-cook everything; fresh brown or white rice, some kind of meat such as steak or chicken or fish for protein, some frozen or fresh veggies for vitamins, and tons of water to keep them hydrated. This will keep them lean and healthy, the canned and dry dog food have tons of preservatives and fillers that make your dog get a bloated belly and makes it hard for them to digest properly.

I feed my puppy canidae. I only switched because she was itching really bad and people said it was a good food. She only itches like normal dogs do now. Look for a brand (whatever you choose) that doesn't have a lot of fillers in it. Corn/wheat/gluten. You can also go to www.dogfoodanalysis.com and look up brands of foods according to how they are rated. Rating of 6 is the best quality food. Ultimately you have to decide what works best for your pet :)

Good-aside from maybe the soybean meal (it causes gas) there is no by-product and no corn. Lots of vitamins and natural substances. There is chemicals but thats preservatives and most all of the have it and need it

Also, I agree with not cooking for my dog--I barely have time to cook for myself. AND my dogs have lived great lives on dog food.

I would say "no". Soybean Meal, Brewers Rice and Powdered Cellulose are cheap ingredients. At least it doesn't have corn orcorn products in it!

The lamb, lamb meal, craked barley and brown rice are ok.

You could do worse and you could do better.

Doesnt sound too good for me. lots of e numbvers and chemically soundin words.. but then im a bit of a narna.

I give my dog really cheap meat from the supermarket and fresh vegetables, not spuds though and sometimes pasta, boil it up - put a few herbs like basil in there helps to freshen her breath. is all natural and good for her, cheaper generally than tinned meat too.
