Yes you should stop. You're not that important that you can't spare 5 seconds for an old lady to check your receipt.

I suppose that it would be proper to stop, allow them to inspect your basket or bag to make sure that nothing is stolen.
If you choose not to, and they happen to pursue you outside of the store, if they find no stolen products, you could sue, (which is so American)
Now, the reason - if everyone were allowed to walk out of Walmart, with anything in hand, never an inspection - the prices would rise due to the company having to cover the cost of stolen property.
As in all things, apparently Walmart, just as police, practice "profiling" at their exit door.
I also find that must stores only ask for a receipt if when exiting, a buzzer goes off, this is usually because the cashier hasn't properly disabled the anti-theft devices attached to a product, which should be disabled after purchase.

They only stop you when you're carrying things out that are not in a bag such as dog food, a TV, etc. so they can make sure you really did pay for it, so I'm pretty sure you could get into trouble if you didn't stop because they would assume you stole something. Stopping for a moment to let them mark your receipt won't kill you.

i usually hate this when some power tripping employee stops you like a bouncer before you leave to check your receipt. at first i'm like what for? then it was security measures to make sure nobody shoplifted. also they "check" if the items in the cart are the same items listed on the receipt. so if you come home with missing items then that person is responsible. i hate this because they just scan the paper. they don't really check and use this as a deterrent to potential shoplifters. you wont get in trouble. its part of their job. everyone has to go through it. nowadays i just smile at them when i feel them getting all power trippy on me.

No, you probably won't get into trouble - but they'll always watch you on subsequent trips.
Just hand the receipt over and quit fussing about it.

yes just stop. its the poor man/ladies job to ask you to see your receipt. it not like they are trying to annoy you. why give the person a hard time by refusing to? unless of course you stole something then by all means ignore them and RUN LIKE THE WIND!!!! LOL

You should stop and let them look at it. I doubt that you would get in trouble if you didn't but, it would be rude to the person asking to check it. Also, they might get in trouble because that is part of their job.
