I would want to be alerted when the object gets 10 to 15 feet away from the sensor.

Ultrasonic proximity sensor may be suitable for your usage it will cover 30 feet good angle span .(Laser type may be available try your best it required rear sensor).

What kind a distance are we talking about? Probably without anymore info I'd have to say a sonar type proximity sensor.
