I am looking for a dog trainer who can help me better understand my two ADULT pitbull mix dogs. I am a VERY responsible pitbull owner, and would like to learn about them more as I grow with the trainer. I have had one of them for over a year. He is is three. I have had the other since May 2007. She is almost two. I adopted BOTH of them from the Humane Society. I am trying to master the walk and teach them basic obediance. Also, I would love for them to learn manners around other dogs. BOTH ARE NEUTERED/SPAYED.
The female is a lot more difficult to walk. The male does VERY well with the gentle lead.

Contact local dog training centers. Use the phone book. They shouldn't have anything against your dogs, based on the breed(s) they're mixed with. They're dog trainers, and that means ALL dogs.

Try checking out the PBRC site
http://www.pbrc.net/
Also possibly join their mail list group. There are some extremely helpful people there who have been working with the breed for may years. They are quick to help new owners who want to learn.

Also contacting one of the local Pit Bull rescues out there can recommend a god trainer.
Some I know of that are quite good that may help are

I also Love The Dog Whisperer however one should use those techniques with a trainer or experience with dogs.
Not just on their own if they have no experience
this is stated in every show

If though he is offering training I would go with him in a heartbeat. The man is amazing in his understanding of dogs in general. However I doubt you can get in to his center unless of course you have plenty of money. :0)

By the way bless you for taking on rescuing two loving dogs no matter what breed they are. I wish there were more willing to give these angels a home.

Villalobas actually offers a FREE to Pit bulls class

I had a difficult time finding a trainer in my area as well. Try goggling trainers in your area, to see if you can find anything on the net. I finally found someone, but she wasn't worth the money. I can offer some suggestions, I have a 1 1/2 female pit who has been extremely stubborn with training. You can email me if you would like.

First, thank you for adopting two angels. Second, and even more importantly, thank you for wanting to be an even more responsible dog-parent by taking your babies to obedience training.

Check in your yellow-pages, with the shelter where you adopted your dogs; and with your vet. They're good sources for trainers. Also, ask at various doggie-day-care centers, even with your local military base or law enforcement. Many K-9 officers are also involved in obedience - or at least may be able to help you find a good trainer.

Again, thank you for being a good dog-parent.

Go to Association of Pet Dog Trainers. There you can search for trainers in your area. It is a professional organization recommended by Victoria Stillwell. Who is a professional dog trainer herself. Hope this helps.
