I have been using cotton bore mops to clean .223, .243, and .300win mag rifles for a while due to the lower cost. Is there any advantage to the more expensive wool mops for this application?

Cotton Mops work just fine and the cost difference is just because the Cotton ones are cheaper to produce than Wool. The Wool Mops are supposedly "longer Lasting" than Cotton. I use mine with a light coating of Rem-Oil as a final finishing swab after cleaning. I found that the Cotton Mops held the oil well and the Wool seemed to repel the oil and make a mess, of a normally simple job. I just use the Cotton Mop till it's getting dirty, toss it in the trash and pop on a new one. I buy them inexpensively in multi -packs from brownells.com (Gunsmith Parts & Supplies)

Wool is a lot more durable than cotton and will last longer. I use cotton and just toss them when they get nasty.
