NO! Choke choice is irrelevant.
Cylinder bores of all Mossberg 835 field barrels are overbored to 10 guage.
Slugs can potentially become lodged in the barrel from becoming destabilized after decontacting the barrel walls in the overbored section leading to a dangerous jam, extensive damage, and potential injury or death.
It's on page 5 of the downloadable owners manual in case you think I'm pulling your chain. It's available under the "Customer Service" tab at the top of the page at www.mossberg.com or go straight here http://mossberg.com/content.asp?ID=520§ion=service
Buy a rifled barrel, they are relatively inexpensive, and more accurate. Good luck and happy hunting.

NO...You can't shoot Rifled Slugs out of your Mossberg 835 Shotgun with a Modified Choke. You can however, purchase an Improved Cylinder Choke that will allow you to shoot Slugs.
You can buy the Improved Cylinder Choke at many authorized Mossberg Dealers and Distributors..The cost $22+ shipping and can also be purchased direct from O.F. Mossberg.

I would exercise some care but it all really depends on what slug you're using. If they are sabot slugs like the Hornady SST then you will be fine shooting them through your modified choke because the actual metallic projectile is very undersized compared to your bore, you just need to be careful and make sure that the plastic sabot clears the choke as well as the slug.
Now if your using lead slugs you will still probably be ok but I doubt anyone would recommend it. If you did fire some slugs through by accident it would most likely just swage the slug as it went through the choke but you still risk dangerously high pressures if the choke is especially tight(not all chokes are the same between manufacturers).
Most guns are going to get their best accuracy with the improved cylinder choke in place anyways and chokes are cheap enough that there really isn't any reason not to just get the IC choke. Best of luck to you.

Do NOT shoot a slug through a choked barrel. Unless there are some new mods that I have not heard of, it is an unwise thing to do.

I am pretty sure you can safely shoot rifled slugs out of any shotgun regardless of what kind of choke it has mounted on it. Check the instruction manual, it is all there.

1 ounce rifled slugs are hollow and made of soft lead and are easily swaged by even by a full choke.
Brenneke and sabot slugs are made to fit the bore and will not swage down as easily and any amount of choke will cause unacceptable chamber pressures.
Go to: http://www.mossberg.com/ and download an owner's manual.
