examine the possibility of using a Stirling cycle engine to recover the heat from the condenser of a home refrigerator. See if it will generate enough energy to charge a battery (keep it charged) and maitain the internal light under normal use.

I graduated 2 years ago and I will tell you the one thing I learned the most from senior design projects...

NEVER DO A PROJECT YOU FEEL MIGHT BE TOO COMPLICATED!!

You will get owned by any and all professors if you are just slightly unsure about anything in your project, or if it did not go as planned. Their job is to rip you to shreds to prepare you for the real world.

For instance....
Every year there is always a Hydrogen Fuel Cell team, some have been successful but only to the fact that the cell ran for a few seconds, others have failed miserably.

For my project all we did was create a Human Powered Vehicle. We incorporated CVT into the design with a slight mod to the transmission and quite a few electrical components of such sorts to get it approved. We also had a pretty sweet concept appeal with an in depth ergonomic and anthropometric analysis. This was relatively easy because we had all the data at hand. The only hard part was constructing it and making sure we had the funds to complete it.

So do something relatively easy. The professors will appreciate it and you won't have as many headaches.

The HVAC project mentioned above sounds good to me!

I think the best thing to do would be to speak to some local businesses about a project. Engineering is about solving problems to make money or improve lives so if you can link your project to a real need you'll get a lot more out of it, benefit someone, get a better grade and possibly make a bit of cash on the way. Try garages, factories, manufacturing firms that sort of thing. You don't have to come up with a brand new invention you just have to apply your knowledge and skills in a creative way. If they like your solution then they should pay you for the rights to use it. Bam!...you are halfway to becoming an engineering consultant.

How about doing an HVAC analysis of one of the school's buildings to see how close you can come to what was actually furnished when it was built.
Your professor should be able to help you get copies of some of the plans to work from.
this was one of the projects that was done pretty regularly when I was in school.

Microwave guided nuclear bombs. Or even changing a motor bike into a go-cart.

I have a great idea but would need to secure the patent first.
