In the UK..... contrary to what some people are saying, the POLICE have and do follow cash in transits (armoured cars).

It is not all the time and very much dependant on intelligence received and previous attacks, etc, etc.

As for the drunk I would imagine that the officers would have shouted up on the local channel for other officers to come and deal with that person. They would not have dealt with him because their responsibility was with the cash in transit. Imagine if they left that and it was subsequently attacked. So for a drunk I would not leave station. If it was someone being seriously assaulted then I would. It all depends how urgent and serious it is.

Yup totally agree with the above. Some security vans in Scotland have a sign on the back saying they are under constant police surveillance. This I doubt, but there would certainly be police nearby if any sort of threat was perceived or intelligence received.
As for the drunk, the guys had been given a job to do, i.e look after the van. They probably called in the drunk for spare units to check up on.

You don't need to be a police officer to answer this question.

Assuming you are in the US, generally speaking, the uniformed people manning armored cars are not police officers. They are ordinary citizens who have, presumably, undergone background and drug checks, and physical (martial arts, etc), mental (driving tactics; crowd control; assertiveness training; what to look out for; etc), and arms (guns, tasers, mace, pepper spray, etc) training.

Since they are not police officers of the Fed, state, county, city, or town gov't, and are hired by private companies, they are under no obligation to provide police-like assistance in any way, shape, or form. It would have been nice, though, if the driver called his dispatcher about it, if only to alert them of a potential con game (believe it or not, this kind of thing happens all the time, con or not).

The bigger question is: why didn't any other person call the cops? No cell phone towers where you live? No phones in the bank?

I work at a bank and see armored cars several times a day. I have NEVER seen a police officer 'babysit' a delivery. Are you sure you are not mistaking the armored car company uniforms for police uniforms? They are often similar and the drivers/guards carry guns.

Armored car workers are not law enforcement officers. They are like security guards. Their primary concern is the money in the car. They could probably care less about the drunk.

because they have to protect the van, If they took off to go deal with a drunk and the van was broken into then there would be a few lost jobs dont you think?

in the uk police dont babysit armoured cars, they are contracted privately,

therefore a drunk being sick, would not be his responsibility.

why didn't you ring the authorities?
