People have the same question about the Big Bang. What happened -before- the Big Bang? The universe is still expanding from the Big Bang and I think there's a theory that it will expand only so far and then begin collapsing until it goes back to one infinitesimal point, causing another Big Bang, and perhaps it's been doing this for TRILLIONS of years not billions.
And it could be the same with creation! The Abrahamic religions believe that God created the universe to last a certain amout of time, to fulfill a plan. (The Dharmic religions believe the universe is eternal, but there are problems with that theory too.) But perhaps this wasn't the -first- universe God created, maybe it was just the last in a long line of universes?
Maybe that's God's hobby! After dinner, instead of watching TV he sits down and creates a universe. Maybe each one is a little better than the last! Maybe in the next one he'll let man's judgment grow a little faster than his technical ability so we won't have wars about oil. And give people a little more taste so we won't have Madonna and Brittney Spears. And make the pit smaller in the avocado.

Well, using your argument, if the first rock was spat out of a volcano, what was the volcano made out of? Just saying.
Anyway, if about 16billion years ago the universe was created, then before that there was nothing that we would consider time. It was just non-being. So, if something existed forever, we would say it has been since the beginning of time, which as you said was several billion years ago.

I have a question for you since you don't believe in God and Heaven anymore why would you believe in hell? I suppose it just evolved by some freak accident of nature. It not that atheists like yourself don't believe in God, but rather that you have chosen to reject him of your own free will.
Do you own a watch? If so where did you get it? You either bought it or someone gave it to you as a gift? If you bought it or it was given to you, it had to come from a store. Where did the store get the watch? From a watch factory. Who made the watch? A watch maker. Even if you had all the parts, yourself could you make the watch work once you put it all the pieces together? I doubt it.
What were you before you became an atheist?

ahh and you know? How? Eternity is possible; God is beyond your comprehension but you can get glimpses if you humble yourself and come under His wings. he will teach you so much. He is eternal; and no you cannot understand it, but that is okay. I am not saying, "be a stupid sheep". NO! Use your mind and read the Holy Scriptures...starting with Genesis and working all the way through Revelation. You may find yourself awake for the first time. Or start with Proverbs; proven to increase understanding and wisdom by simply reading! Try Mark for some light reading, or Romans for a challenge; or even Hebrews.....How can you be so sure it's unintelllengent to question leaps of faith like "the earth is 16 billion years old" says whom??? What basis? Do you even know what a basis is?

Yes, I believe God decided to create the universe out of darkness because He wanted too ,and because He wanted a family.. He wanted a relationship with you and I !! Nothing is impossible with God, you might be trying to compare God and His nature with something here on earth. Who can fathom our Creator ?like how deep is the ocean? How were the stars made? How many stars are there? Someday He may reveal to you these things when you arrive in heaven with Him. But all this takes faith , got to have it to make it to heaven the bible says, and it's faith in a person , Jesus, now He has a begining!! Anyone who believes and accepts Him has God too. The bible also says FAITH pleases God. So come to Him humbly with childlike faith and soon He may give you some answers . He loves YOU!

Haha, yes thats the age-old dilemma of an infinite, eternal god. Since the universe itself is finite, he needs to have spent an eternity in emptiness doing nothing.
Unless he has been creating and destroying universes for eternity, and ours is just the latest model. Or time is just a circle, and before the beginning was the end, and after the end of time is the beginning again. Although an eternally circling god would get a little dizzy.

God is outside of time, so it's incorrect to think of him as sitting around doing nothing until 4,000 BC. He does not work within the confines of timelines.
Yes, the universe had a beginning, it was created. God created it. God was not created and therefore has no beginning.
Expand your mind.

God is the creation of people who had to try to explain things that they could not. Many cultures have had many God's and there are several "Gods today! Believe whatever you wish but just remember that God was created by man not vice versa! Also if people with blind faith were to walk in the middle of the train tracks with there eyes closed they WOULD eventually be hit by a train no matter how strong that faith!

Why could God not have always existed?
What makes you think that He took His time to create? He created time.
We know God only to the extent that He has revealed Himself to us through His word and by His Holy Spirit and all we know concerning this matter is that He (Father, Son & Holy Spirt) pre-existed His creation and that He is eternal. What's so difficult to understand about that?
