I am a guest at my boyfriend's sister's home for dinner this coming Sunday night. What kind of dessert should I take as a hostess gift for us to have after dinner? I am partial to something chocolate...

Before you start altering her menu, you might want to call and ask your hostess directly.

Then, if she asks you to bring Key-lime pie - bring that - not the eclairs you so desire. Those you keep for yourself.

If available, some strawberries, dipped into melted chocolate. Mmmmmm. It is quite a social pudding as you all sit around the chocolate bowl whilst dipping strawberries.
A bar of chocolate can be melted by placing it in a glass bowl which is in a pan of boiling water. Microwaving just seems to burn it.
If having a barbecue, put strawberries on a skewer and place them on the barbecue until they 'sweat'. All the flavour comes out. Dipped in chocolate is even better.

You might want to pick up a box of assorted chocolates. That way, if she has a dessert already planned, it can just be in addition to hers.

If yours is the "official" dessert, you might consider a cheesecake (or buy an assortment of different slices). They are quite easy to make, btw.

Find and Italian bakery near by and get an assortment of pastries. They usually have something that everyone will like.
Yum.

go to the bakery, get a nice spread of cookies and either cheesecake, strawberry short cake or chocolate mouse! yum!

it should complement the cuisine being served.
chocolate goes with everything except for sushi.
maybe get her a nice chocolate mousse cake.
