The Lord recently brought me into a Reformed Presbyterian church that does not allow instrumental accompaniment to their worship singing - which is entirely the metrical Psalms. Prior to that I had about 15 years in a Baptist church where I was in the praise group (on keyboards). I would never have joined the R.P. church of my own voilition, one reason being that sombre Psalm singing is not my idea of joyous praise! But the Lord made it clear that was where I was to go, and 'go' I went!

They say that the 1st century church only sang hymns of praise, specifically the Psalms, as per the Jewish synagogue type of worship which, by then, was purely vocal. I've never checked that out because I don't think the argument has a leg to stand on even if that point is true. The Psalms tell us to worship on stringed instruments, (eg harps), wind instruments (eg flutes), percussion (eg cymbals) and trumpets. The dearth of musicians in the early church might have more to do with 'vocals only' than theology. Poor people were unlikely to be musically accomplished, even if they could afford a half decent instrument. The new church just might not have had musicians to call upon to lead their praise, so used vocals and Psalms (until the church expanded, stopped being persecuted and began to develop its music.)

Unaccompanied Psalm singing is entirely appropriate for worship, however (just so long as it doesn't lapse into a dirge - a constant possibility in cold climes). It's the insistance that it is the ONLY acceptable form of praise that is utter rubbish. So, when it all gets too much, I sit myself down to play my piano and sing my heart out to the Lord. My word, some of those dour Presbyterians are in for a shock when the trumpet of the Lord blasts forth on the day of His return! They'd better watch they don't miss the boat protesting it cannot be of God!

I have worked for many years as a church music director - and I just don't get this, especially in light of reading the book of Psalms -- all filled with references to using instruments for worship.

It's kind of strange...where I work we use instruments all the time, and I MEAN instruments! Guitars, drums, keyboards, strings, harps, tin whistle, flute, recorder, bells...almost everything and it makes worship really beautiful.

I'm not out to change anyone's mind, but CAN someone explain it and cite some sources as to why some churches don't allow instruments?

Thanks.

Well this is mainly because the church of christ goes only by what is in the bible and the bible says to sing with melody in your hearts. Instrumental music was seen in the old testament only but when Christ died on the cross for our sins there was a new church formed. The church of christ is the only church you read about in the bible. Not using music is only simply because the bible tells us not to.

There's nothing wrong with not using instruments., But one of the scriptures they use is Ephesians 5:19. In this scripture theirs is a Greek word psallo which means to play a stringed instrument with fingers;to strike a chord;sing to the music of a harp. so I'm still not exactly sure were this comes from. They used musical instruments all Thur out the bible to praise God.

I think that acapella choral music is the most beautiful there is, but I could see limiting instruments in an effort to maintain reverence in a worship service. Some instruments, such as drums or electric guitars aren't exactly conducive to quiet introspection... :-)

Some are very straight-line old fashioned.

There are some things that do not belong on the church platform:

Heavy metal.....
Rap.....
Worldly music.....

Other than that, all instruments are ok. As long as we are praising the One who deserves the praise.....

I don't know. Because in the Psalms, they used musical instruments, so it's fine to use them.
